    1. A very quick and easy read. Joel demonstrates a command of the language, and a very good understanding of his technique, but I finished this collection of shorts with a feeling that I'd missed the part about the end of the world. The stories are each well written and engaging in their own way, but none of them cover any territory or offer any insight that hasn't been gone over a bazillion times before. While each of the stories encompasses no small amount of tragedy for their protagonists, I did [...]

    2. Good afternoon constant reader. In a nutshell, if you like a short story collection that is chilling and thought provoking, then this book is for you.Bedtime Stories for the Apocalypse is a tasty collection of stories, perfect for killing a little time, and getting a case of the heebee jeebees.I'll hit a few of the high lights of this collection and allow you to discover the rest for yourself."Shiners" is set in a post-apocalyptic world, where something really bad has happened and it seems to hav [...]

    3. I read this after Bait, and I thought the stories were not quite as strong over all as those in that collection. It's hard to write a compelling dystopian short story (which many of these are), because there's no way to cram in all the backstory about why your world is the way it is and how it works -- I thought this hurt the story Mr. Blue in spite of its striking imagery, although Harvey's Favorite Color (another dystopia) manages to use that very lack of background information to make its wor [...]

    4. 'Bedtime Stories' is a wonderful collection of short stories all linked together with an unsettling distrust of the future. Some of the stories, such as 'Shiners' and 'Mr. Blue', focus on total disruption between mankind's ability to communicate and interact. 'Padre', a story about a man willing to go into the middle of a Mexican sewer in search for a cure for his daughter's cancer, ends on such a disgusting yet oddly hopeful note that I felt baffled. Even the weaker stories ('Branding' comes to [...]

    5. A small collection of nine short stories are in this book. They range from strange to gross to some that leave you thinking. The book was overall entertaining with most of it being enjoyable.
