    About "Marija Jurić Zagorka"

      • Marija Jurić Zagorka

Marija Juri Zagorka was a Croatian journalist, novelist and dramatist, the first female journalist and second in the list of most popular Croatian writers of all time by the 2005 poll compiled by Vjesnik, a Zagreb daily newspaper Many of her works have been adapted to film. She was born in the village of Negovec near Vrbovec, to a well standing family, which allowed her a good education, but in spite of her talent and many gifts, her parents decided to end her education early and, soon after leaving school, married her off to a man whom she barely knew, a Hungarian railway clerk 18 years her senior The marriage ended abruptly with her escape from the house, first to Sremska Mitrovica and then to Zagreb, due to her husband s and mother in law s abuse. It was in Zagreb that she began her career as a journalist, which was a highly unusual career for a woman in those days, and because of that, she was frowned upon, humiliated and prejudiced against her entire life She was forced to write anonymously, under pseudonyms that hid her gender, and hide herself at work so nobody would notice there was a woman writing for and later running a newspaper This didn t stop her from being politically involved, fighting against the Germanization and Magyarization of Croatia, and fighting for the rights of women, which caused her considerable problems in life, both professionally and privately.Urged by Bishop Strossmayer, Zagorka began writing historic novels, usually set in 16th, 17th and 18th century Croatia She instantly became popular amongst the people, who endearingly called her The Fairy of Zagorje upon publishing Gri ka vje tica and Queen of Croatians upon publishing Gordana Kraljica Hrvata The critics and her colleagues, however, constantly put her down, ridiculed her work, slurred her as a person and as a writer, and deliberately ignored her in literary magazines and almanacs Still, she kept on writing and published her works as a part of her newspaper so they would be affordable to the general public, adapted her own and the works of August enoa for theater, ran two magazines enski list 1925 1938 and Hrvatica 1938 1940 addressed to the female public, and with her young female colleagues formed the Society of Croatian Female Writers.Upon the formation of Independent State of Croatia, the magazine Hrvatica was forcibly canceled and her entire estate is taken from her, leaving her without means to support herself Desperate, Zagorka attempted suicide, but luckily survived Living in Zagreb, she saw the end of WWII thanks to the financial help and care of her loyal public Despite her age and weak health, she continued fighting for the rights of women, even though it earned her the ridicule and animosity of her male colleagues, who repeatedly called her a madwoman and mannish old hag , until the day of her death.None of her novels have been translated into English, but two are available in German Gri ka vje tica and Malleus maleficarum 11 of her novels, published in Croatian, are found in the Library of Congress The exact number of the novels she has written is unknown, but it is presumed that she wrote around 35, some of which are lost forever.

    1. I've finally gotten around to reading this Croatian classic. In English it is called The Witch of Grich, Secret of the Bloody Bridge. This fascinating novel was first published in 1912. Incredible.

    3. Oh my God. I didn't see this book on GR till now.I loved this series I swear. Stanka i Meško su predivni (ok I know my croatian sux, but I had to say something :D)But, I am more Nera and Siniša fan aahhhh <3

Bas me zanima drugi dio.

    5. A sort of a prequel to one of Zagorka's most famous series Grička Vještica (The Witch of Grich), it's a very interesting historical mystery that includes action, unrequited love, intrigue and descriptions of beautiful Croatian landscape. This is only the first book (which I didn't know prior to finishing this one, because I didn't expect the publishers to divide the story), so I do not know yet how the story ends. The characters are definitely two-dimensional and, at times, so exasperating, th [...]

    9. This is the first book of the series Grička vještica.Through the characters we can very well find out how the relationship between people of that time work out.We learn how the Church functioned.Zagorka speaks about the position of women in society as a true feminist - a person who is fighting for the equality of people. The book can serve as a real history books, and her romansiranost gives her extra points and grace, because it is not aggressive as today's women's literature in this region, a [...]

    12. Zanimljiva i bogata radnjom.

    13. 8/10Dala som si re-read spred nejakých 10 rokov i viac. Fakt neviem. :D

    14. - Bio sam mlad i obijestan, prije deset godina. Vatreni život i mnogo novaca! Spavam i ustajem jer to svi cine, pijem i odlazim u goste jer to rade i drugi. Plivam s ostalima! Napokon, covjek mora plivati kad se vec nasao u rijeci zivota!- Nadite neku s [...]

    15. Keď som si knihu doniesla domov z knižnice a zbadala ju moja mamina, tak povedala: "Jej, to som kedysi čítala. Dobré to bolo."

    16. 3.5 starsI don't know. I feel very conflicted. On one hand, it was not my cup of tea. The characters were sometimes utterly stupid and it was just too damn long and I had problems to orientate among the characters and the storylines because they were dumped at me all at once.BUT.The main love story of Meško and Stanka (I don't know their Croatian names, I read this book translated into Slovak) is beautifully crafted and is in a direct contrast with the quick falling in love with Katarína. It co [...]

Zajedno s njima otkrivala stvari.Knjiga m [...]

    18. I totally missed this one while I was growing.OK, the storyline is about everything you get here cause the characterization is really really poor. However it is a page turner which kept me awake while I was rushing through its cca 600 pages.Grof Jurica Mesko, barunica Lehotska, porucnik Stanko/Stanka - all these characters are totaly two dimensional, the final twist is totaly unpredictable (good thing) but also totally incredible (not so good thing)Overall I am glad I read it but I agree - this i [...]

    19. Pravi 'page turner' i lagana lektira jer preovladavaju dijalozi.

    21. Great thing about this book is that it is really easy to read and it kind of drags you into the story. It would be even better if the characters weren't so shallow.
