    About "John Grisham"

      • John Grisham

Long before his name became synonymous with the modern legal thriller, he was working 60 70 hours a week at a small Southaven, Mississippi law practice, squeezing in time before going to the office and during courtroom recesses to work on his hobby writing his first novel.Born on February 8, 1955 in Jonesboro, Arkansas, to a construction worker and a homemaker, John Grisham as a child dreamed of being a professional baseball player Realizing he didn t have the right stuff for a pro career, he shifted gears and majored in accounting at Mississippi State University After graduating from law school at Ole Miss in 1981, he went on to practice law for nearly a decade in Southaven, specializing in criminal defense and personal injury litigation In 1983, he was elected to the state House of Representatives and served until 1990.One day at the DeSoto County courthouse, Grisham overheard the harrowing testimony of a twelve year old rape victim and was inspired to start a novel exploring what would have happened if the girl s father had murdered her assailants Getting up at 5 a.m every day to get in several hours of writing time before heading off to work, Grisham spent three years on A Time to Kill and finished it in 1987 Initially rejected by many publishers, it was eventually bought by Wynwood Press, who gave it a modest 5,000 copy printing and published it in June 1988.That might have put an end to Grisham s hobby However, he had already begun his next book, and it would quickly turn that hobby into a new full time career and spark one of publishing s greatest success stories The day after Grisham completed A Time to Kill, he began work on another novel, the story of a hotshot young attorney lured to an apparently perfect law firm that was not what it appeared When he sold the film rights to The Firm to Paramount Pictures for 600,000, Grisham suddenly became a hot property among publishers, and book rights were bought by Doubleday Spending 47 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, The Firm became the bestselling novel of 1991.The successes of The Pelican Brief, which hit number one on the New York Times bestseller list, and The Client, which debuted at number one, confirmed Grisham s reputation as the master of the legal thriller Grisham s success even renewed interest in A Time to Kill, which was republished in hardcover by Doubleday and then in paperback by Dell This time around, it was a bestseller.Since first publishing A Time to Kill in 1988, Grisham has written one novel a year his other books are The Firm, The Pelican Brief, The Client, The Chamber, The Rainmaker, The Runaway Jury, The Partner, The Street Lawyer, The Testament, The Brethren, A Painted House, Skipping Christmas, The Summons, The King of Torts, Bleachers, The Last Juror, and The Broker and all of them have become international bestsellers There are currently over 225 million John Grisham books in print worldwide, which have been translated into 29 languages Nine of his novels have been turned into films The Firm, The Pelican Brief, The Client, A Time to Kill, The Rainmaker, The Chamber, A Painted House, The Runaway Jury, and Skipping Christmas , as was an original screenplay, The Gingerbread Man The Innocent Man October 2006 marks his first foray into non fiction.Grisham lives with his wife Renee and their two children Ty and Shea The family splits their time between their Victorian home on a farm in Mississippi and a plantation near Charlottesville, VA.Grisham took time off from writing for several months in 1996 to return, after a five year hiatus, to the courtroom He was honoring a commitment made before he had retired from the law to become a full time writer representing the family of a railroad brakeman killed when he was pinned between two cars Preparing his case with the same passion and dedication as his books protagonists, Grisham successfully argued his clients case, earning them a jur

    1. This was the first novel I've read of John Grisham and it inspired some of the most important decisions of my life. It affected me so much that it irrevocable changed my life for all eternity. (I'm probably exaggerating but most of it's true.)First of all, because of this book, I took up Accounting as my major in college. This book painted a very exciting picture of how an accountant's life could be very exciting. It showed how he could steal from the Mob and get away with it. Who wouldn't want [...]

    2. it's not that this book necessarily deserves a 1, being the worst score possible, but it's just so fucking dumb. I only finished it because I'm stuck in between 4 rice fields in japan, and the only reading I had available in english was. well. the label on my pepsi bottle.IF you happen to be a 40-50 year old (white)man, and like reading about "6 figures", then I'll understand you liking this book.Hhere's a taste."And, don't worry McDeere (former star college quarterback), The firm will front you [...]

    3. I read this back when it was first released in 1991! At the time I was a teenager who was getting on a plane to visit relatives and I needed something to read to pass the timeE FIRM distracted me the for the long plane trip. Just recently I was at the used bookstore looking for a book for my teenage son to read while he is gone for the next 10 weeks working at a Boy Scout camp as a lifeguard. The series he is reading wasn't available so I started searching for an alternative. The only books I co [...]

    4. The Firm is very extreme and often unbelievable, but it's still a very well-written and gripping story nonetheless.

    5. This is quick, because I can't imagine anyone who has never read a Grisham novel/watched a 'film' adaptation of a Grisham novel/read a book review of a Grisham novel/watched that episode of 3rd Rock From the Sun all those years ago where the family goes into Witness Protection for some reason and they're all reading different Grisham novels, and when they realize the plot is exactly the same, they switch books and continue reading and sure enough, the plot is exactly the same. And yes, I've just [...]

    6. This book is really interesting, well written and absolutely irresistible. I'm on a mission to read every book that Grisham wrote, because his books never disappoint me.

    7. Mitchell McDeere graduates from Harvard Law and is about to begin his career as a lawyer. Blessed with superhuman capabilities handed down generously by Mr.Grisham himself, Mitch finds no trouble in getting nailing three top job offers: two from from Wall Street, one from Memphis. Among other things, Mitch graduates with top honors, is among the top five in his class, was a quarterback at school, is an athlete (but his diet is mainly alcohol and cheeseburgers for the remainder of the novel), wor [...]

    8. I loved this book. This book belongs in the same category with the ones you can’t put down, and you curl in a corner, shaking with red eyes and a gaunt frame from malnutrition. Grisham developed the characters well and developed the plot with skill of a master storyteller. I noticed some similarities with Stephen King’s style, such as using a reference to the object with “the” instead of “a” (the “coffee table sat alone in the room,” “the man sat at the bar”), and he refers t [...]

    9. Thought I'd never get to the end of this epic Grisham novel. I think this is one of his earlier efforts and I remember watching the film a long time ago. A rookie tax lawyer is head hunted straight from school and offered a dream job with an extremely wealthy company. Star struck, The Firm dazzles him with money, houses, carsd all the trimmings. It seems too good to be true. The only slight botheration are the plaques of remembrance in one of the offices. The Firm has had a higher than average nu [...]

    10. This book was fantastic! Loved every second of it. A few weeks ago it came on TV and I was saying "this is a great movie!" but within minutes I realized I had NOT seen it! I was thinking of A Few Good Men! Who knew I had never seen The Firm?? My husband said he'd read it years ago and it was one of the best books he'd ever read. So, I DVRd the movie and went to get the book (I didn't watch the movie yet, but I've heard it was a disappointment from the book of course right???)I seriously couldn't [...]

    11. Grisham is an excellent writer who writes fantastic legal thrillers. This is one of the best I have read by him!

    12. Mitch McDeere is near the top of his Harvard Law School graduating class and can virtually have his pick of jobs with high-powered Wall Street firms. But at the last minute, he agrees to an interview with a small Memphis firm, Bendini, Lambert & Locke. The firm's search committee has carefully vetted Mitch and has selected him as their number one draft pick for the year. They bring Mitch and his wife Abby to visit Memphis and make him an offer that is too good to refuse.Mitch accepts the off [...]

    13. I have scant memories of this thriller that was quickly turned out as a movie by the Hollywood machine. I think it was entertaining and at the time a bit of a renegade book in the US which did not really have this kind of lawyer thriller fiction at the time if my memory serves (Law & Order was not yet on TV - lots of cop shows, not so many lawyer ones) so I have no idea now, 30 years later how interesting this book would be to re-read

    14. I recently realized 1) I've never read any of John Grisham's novels and 2) that's a shame. So I picked this up at the library a couple trips ago, when I found myself browsing in the G's. Why The Firm rather than The Client or The Associate? My grandfather, a former lawyer, happened to mention it in a conversation a couple months ago, so the title was on my mind.My main impression is that this is the kind of pulp that no one will read 100 years from now (thank goodness). It reminded me very stron [...]

    16. Excellent read! suspenseful, entertaining, great plot twist, good character development and nice depth.commend to all (paperback!)

    17. The Firm by John GrishamThe Firm by John Grisham will draw you into a situation where the choices you make not only affect you, but also the people who depend on you. When a young lawyer named Mitch McDeere has to choose between staying with a corrupt business or doing the right thing. The decisions that are made throughout the book are told by the lawyer Mitch. The story is centered around Mitch McDeere. He finished 3rd in his class at Harvard Law School. All the top law firms are trying to get [...]

    18. The sole reason I started reading this book was that it was the only literature at hand at my new place. Can you say b-o-r-i-n-g?Now I feel I have to slog through the remaining 100 pages or so of mindless 'furiously-paced thrills' just so that I can start on my new acquisitions (Bradbury, Pratchett, Adams, Lovecraft, Jordan, Eco )Highly recommended for beginners and people who don't know what a good book really should be.Update: I can't take it anymore. Dropped!

    19. I thought this was a poor book at best. Then I read this lovely headline today. And the innocent friend? It's a good thing he became an author. He would make a rather poor defense attorney.

    20. It is always fun to read books where situations are so gripping that you don't feel like doing anything before knowing what's to happen next. With the protagonist, you too get galvanised and roused. The story is fantastic, the writing style is impressive, the characters are intriguing in a way you would want to know what their next move could be and everything comes with a price. My first book of John Grisham has impressed me much. If you are looking for an adventurous ride, I say you must take [...]

    21. DNF at p.64Whenever I have problems, I resort to reading fiction. This usually seems to assuage the pain that is reality, but sometimes it doesn't work. Sometimes the plot is so banal and unexciting that you just put your book down, stare at the ceiling, and think about every single thing that can possibly go wrong over the next sixty years. So I only started reading this because I can't handle seeing a movie first if it's based on a book. And my parents want to see the movie adaptation of this wi [...]

    23. Wow! That's all I can say about The Firm, I can't believe I didn't read it sooner, it's what I called a classic edge of your seat thriller, it was a lot better than the movie I thought, John Grisham does a great job explaining the legal system, this is my second book by Grisham and it certainly won't be my last. Anyone that's looking for a good legal thriller I recommend The Firm if you haven't read it already.

    24. This is a wonderful novel brimming with a plethora of characters who come to life devastatingly as the story unfolds. Of course there is Mitch the main protagonist (‘young lawyer’, as we say in Africa) and his beautiful wife, Abby. There is the elderly, sly, unctuous Oliver Lambert who is exposed early as a sick depraved man – also a lawyer. As he is referred to: “he said you were a real nice man. I thought you’d like that” . What an irony! Then there is Nathan Blake, another veteran [...]

    25. This was my first taste of John Grisham and for awhile, I would read everything I could get my hands on by him. And then, not so much. But I would return to this over and over to remind myself of how great he had been. I read this over the course of a month and then read "A Time to Kill" at the pool that summer. It was the first time I had ever paced myself in my reading and it was like torture. :-)I am not sure why this wasn't in my book [glad I saw somone's review so I could add it], but it wa [...]

    26. An absolutely amazing book. One I wish I had wrote.Mitchell McDeere is sought after by one of the country's top law firms. Bendini, Lamdert & Locke from Memphis wants Mitchel and offer him wealth and a chance to start his promising legal career in ernest in exchange for his loyalty and service. They agree to pay his student loans, find him a new home, even offer him a brand new car. All this is too much for Mitchell to pass up, so he forgoes offers from firms in New York and Chicago and agre [...]

    27. Snap! I forgot all about Grisham when I putting in the crap books - thanks Conrad. Summer of '92, we were staying in a cabin off Devil's Lake in Michigan near my aunt's; I finished off the books I'd read and was unable to convince anyone in my family to play "D-Day To the Rhine", the WW2 strategy game I bought in Anarbor, but luckily my aunt had stocked our cabin with a whole slew of Grisham.I think I read this in a day, and since the last paragraph was pure memoir that has nothing to do with th [...]
