yours Luisa has a lovely life, a loving husband, an adorable son, a enjoyable writing gig when her son Joe starts at a new posh school Louisa is desperate for her and Joe to fit in so when Darcy befriends her, and her son Tyler quickly becomes friends with Joe, Louisa is absolutely thrilled things seem to be going swimmingly, but things were just a little too good to be true slowly and subtly Louisa begins to notice things and Darcy s facade slowly begins to peel away but is Louisa seeing things where there is nothing to see Is she getting paranoid No one seems to believe her not her husband, not her sister, so is this real or is it all in Louisa s mind Just like Louisa I was so tense and so frustrated during this book how frustrating would it be for people not to believe what you know to be true I had so much sympathy for Luisa, I really wanted to reach through the pages and shake some sense into her husband Jared But I must admit Darcy was one clever girl She almost had me her house after school Louisa and Darcy get on so well and Darcy is so kind and helpful that they soon become firm friends But then little things start to chip away in Louisa s mind, why does Darcy do some really cruel and thoughtless things, why does she hurt her feelings so much but not realise and that man is still following her around. This is one of the best descriptive stories of how a normal confident woman is gently but firmly brought down chip, chip away taking away her confidence, making her seem weak and neurotic to her husband and family to the point that no one believes her And then, when she is at her lowest point, Darcy s real plans come action and Louisa s already failing life becomes a nightmare and falls into total devastation.Shalini Boland s writing is tight, to the Louise s by providing free upscale office space for his new venture an advertising agency called Create That should have set off my alarm at once But gradually Darcy subjects Louise and Joe to minor humiliations and oversights, finally even stealing Louise s column in a national newspaper And then Darcy s husband is murdered. The story is narrated in 1st person by Louise, but interrupted by a back story about two children in care in the 90s, a really tough a capable 12 y o named Nicole and her younger brother, whom she protects from bullies with extreme measures Of course if you are familiar with this genre, it won t take long to figure out the relationship between the principal character in the back story and in the present story set in 2015.Besides offering an over familiar plot, we have to endure an extended thriller ending in which the villain is unmasked and menaces the victim As usual in this genre, instead of villain s taking care of business and despatching the helpless victims, the villain had to give a long speech revealing why the villain has an animus against the victim, which of course is nothing any sane person would blame the victim for, thus establishing the villain s being a sandwich or two shy of a picnic It also appears that we shall be left with a loose end allowing a sequel, but fortunately there is a final chapter set two years later I d wondered why the main story was set in 2015 wrapping everything it, with the moral that it is a dangerous world and you should have knee surgery, run everyday, and practise kick boxing I honestly thought when liked how the tensions between the characters started to build up bit by bit, almost unnoticeable at the beginning For me, it was what made the book really good, the way the small things can change one s life without even realizing that. The story was told from the point of view of Louisa, so all along we can see how she changes, the evolution of her relationship with her new best friend , how she deals with all of that and how it affects her Sometimes, i felt almost angry with her, she was way too accommodating for others and, well, she should ve seen some of that coming but i liked her character well enough, especially at the end Darcy Lane was an intriguing and interesting character.I enjoyed this book very much and i would recommend it to all my friends flag 3 likesLike see review could go on and on They were great actresses that were often in great films, but they all also appeared in B movies in which they were usually strong women with either a heart of gold or evil incarnate Or one was an innocent, a naive babe in the woods and the other was the hard as nails dame who was taking her for a ride of one sort or another Big melodrama big cheese factor Which brings me to The Best Friend Up to the end, I would categorize it as big melodrama and cheese and could see any of the above actresses playing the two female leads I truly enjoyed it for that formula that we ve seen a million times The ending was rather flat, anticlimactic and could have been handled much better in my humble opinion Be that as it may, I reveled in the cheese for a good three fourths of were at first odd rude behaviors turn into deeper and sadistic cruelty The worse the behavior is the less Jarad is inclined to believe his wife Meanwhile, Louisa is also being followed by a strange bearded man whenever she leaves the house. This English thriller is an interesting portrait of a woman in the orbit of a sociopath, and things get really dangerous when, after Darcy and her husband separate, Louisa goes to the husband s apartment to ask about Darcy. The narrative of the book switches between Louisa s perspective and a third person narrator describing the life of a boy and his tough and cruel older sister It s not always an easy book to read Before the situation gets into thriller mode the reader has to squirm through what s seemingly random bullying and gaslighting by Darcy for no apparent reason, and what seems like an unrelated second narrative is a little bizarre at first As the reasons that Darcy has targeted Louisa are revealed both narratives become clear, but the book would have been as good with less distractions had the two stories meshed earlier. The book has a pretty powerful climax when it becomes clear just how insane Darcy is and how much blood she s willing to spill, and there s an excellent finale with an epilogue that wraps things up perfectly At the time this is being written it s listed as s 1 book in British Contemporary Fiction, and if you re patient with the start it does finish with fireworks flag 2 likesLike see review Dec 20, 2018 Els rated it it was amazing What can I say about this author s books Every time I pick one up, I am captivated from the beginning I so like her style it makes me want to hide somewhere so I can read the book without being disturbed.I love the way she can create crazy people and manages to let them act very sane and controlled until little by little she shows their true colors. But often in every mad person, a sad one is hidden I can t help feeling sorry for them and their past If only they 2. I have been reading all of Shalini Boland s books in recent weeks, and this was the last one available Like the others, it is fast paced and engaging, a good holiday read which is what is was for me However, I did feel the story was a little predictable and repetitive at times I would probably recommend her other books over this one, though it certainly wasn t bad.Find reviews and bookish fun at
