faithful, of course, to Monroe, the book s most iconic subject, while others, like Steve Cochran, a villain in movies and a hard drinking, bed hopping cop magnet in reality, If it goes by, I ve always known it was fickle, Marilyn Monroe once said of fame, an overriding theme in this collection of essays, profiles, and memoir by showbiz survivor Duke Haney Fame proved faithful, of course, to Monroe, the book s most iconic subject, while others, like Steve Cochran, a villain in movies and a hard drinking, bed hopping cop magnet in reality, were widely forgotten before their untimely, often mysterious deaths Taking an experimental tack in some instances, Haney employs a psychic medium to conduct a s ance at Jim Morrison s former residence and an astrologer to interpret the birth chart of an astrology crazed film star turned bank robber He attends the funeral of the next James Dean who became a raggedy street person, performs a cringeworthy nude scene in a movie produced by King of the Bs Roger Corman, and searches for the camper van where funk trailblazer Sly Stone has been reduced to living Painstakingly researched and compulsively readable, Death Valley Superstars offers a kind of midnight tour of Los Angeles past and present, highlighting hidden corridors and seldom heard anecdotes about a few of the many who, fooled by Hollywood s mirages, found themselves caught in its quicksand Duke Haney, one of my favorite writers, has produced yet another masterpiece This time, Haney trains his one of a kind vision on one of his signature obsessions fading celebrity, of the kind peculiar to Hollywood Here is an author at the peak of his powers, writing with precision about a subject that is his absolute forte No one else has the dark genius to conjure up a book like this, a great American tragedy, endlessly interesting Greg Olear, author of Totally Killer, Fathermucker, and Dirty Rubles Duke Haney tells the stories you think you ve heard before but haven t, and the stories you can t believe no one else has told He makes Hollywood beguiling, lurid, and human while getting to the bottom of what it means to chase a dream Jim Ruland, author of Forest of Fortune A smart, funny pop culture cocktail, served straight, no chaser Mixes smooth 100 proof prose with the street level buzz of a punkish homebrew Paul M Sammon, author of Future Noir The Making of Blade Runner Haney is a meticulous virtuoso of his craft, deft in his research, reflection, and prose Slow read this book without distractions because writing and tales this exceptional must be savored Ronlyn Domingue, author of The Mercy of Thin Air and the Keeper of Tales Trilogy Like the best kind of writing, these tales, full of disarming charm and sly wit, both entertain and leave an ache in your heart Mary Guterson, author of We Are All Fine Here Haney bravely guides us like Dante into the searing inferno of our collective fantasy life Brin Jonathan Butler, author of The Domino Diaries and The Grandmaster I only have two requirements of book authors One is that he loves his material The second is that his sensibility yields insight Duke Haney is one of a handful of writers I trust implicitly in both categories In these times of lie and compromise, we need his truth all the Art Edwards, author of Badge I know what you re saying Yet another Hollywood book As if I m on a Death writing needs to be short enough to engage brains addled by tweet culture, his sprawling stories somehow manage to captive like quite honestly no other His work is almost always packed with staggering amounts of research, yet is deeply personal it is moving, but often funny laugh out loud funny He can write sentences that would make me sick with jealousy, if I weren t so entertained and he does it again and again and again, building up these long, utterly beautiful stories His new book, Death Valley Superstars, is a collection of his finest writing The essays are united by the theme of cinema, which early on we learn is of almost unparalleled importance in the author s life My teens would have been intolerable without movies, and I hoped to inspire oth ers as I had been inspired, but I sailed too late to find the Hollywood I sought It was a desperate Hollywood that produced art accidentally.Haney was inspired by movies from a young age, and so it is little surprise then that he found his way into cinema, both as an actor and a writer These stories find their way into his book, at places poignant, and elsewhere hilarious In one chapter, we learn that stills from an old sex scene can be found on a gay porn website But this is not a book about the author, exactly His own adventures and misadventures add an extra layer of interest and entertainment, but each chapter each essay has its own focus Take, for example, an essay on Sean Flynn, son of the great Errol Flynn Here is a piece of writing from which almost any writer on earth could learn a thing or two His research is meticulous but it is the story telling that keeps you hooked Haney knows well how to get to the heart of the matter, and he does so in a way that is both sensitive and informative His work is packed with dialogue and details, bringing to life his characters and their stories I had honestly never heard of Sean Flynn prior to reading the essay, and yet by the end I felt I knew him intimately This is true of another chapter, starring Marilyn Monroe It is shocking but not sensationalist rather, it is sensitive, intelligent, and enlightening You get the impression that Haney connects with the people he writes about, these misanthropes and outsiders, people all too often cast off or otherwise ruined by Hollywood And, in an essay about a s ance for Jim Morrison, perhaps he really does connect with them Even the dead ones flag 4 likesLike see review View 1 comment Jan 28, 2019 Jonathan Dunkle rated it really liked it review of another edition Shelves 2019 I stopped reviewing books writing Every sentence that Duke writes is immaculately constructed and well honed Every word is deliberately selected I have neither the patience or self awareness to build a single sentence as well as Duke, let alone try to string together multiples Death Valley Superstars epitomizes Duke s meticulous approach to his craft He weaves his personal experiences into his passion for old time Hollywood to create a mix of journalism and memoir that is entertaining and informative One of my criteria for excellent non fiction is that it makes me want to learn about something I read in the book, the the better.I do not share Duke s passion for old movies and actors If this book were written by pretty much anyone else I might make an exception for Michael Chabon or John Jeremiah Sullivan , I would never have cracked the spine or whatever the e equivalent is as I just do not have an interest in the subject matter That being said, reading this I did want to find out about some of the individuals Duke discusses I learned a lot and i enjoyed reading about Duke s efforts and escapades And as always, I was humbled and dazzled by Duke s writing It s just so good.I reserve my five star ratings on for books that really impact me, such as Banned for Life, but that should by no means slight Death Valley Superstars It is a great read and one I recommend regardless of whether one thinks they have an interest in mid to late 20th century Hollywood It is well worth the read just to experience the immense talent of an extremely under appreciated writer flag Like see review Peter rated it Duke Haney, actor, screenplay writer, novelist, essayist, has delivered a well written collection of sixteen essays revolving around some of those impacted by, affected by, corrupted by, shaped by Fame that fleeting authority and celebrity bestowed by a chosen few in the Hollywood system that has captured the American imagination and attention since the 1900s.The quality of the writing throughout was pretty consistent, as was the voice, etc etc But my own interest varied widely from piece to piece I think that s largely on me, not Haney But then again, maybe Haney shouldn t have picked topics that have been done to death I m not sure that the universe needs another essay reflection biography anything about Marilyn Monroe, Lee Harvey Oswald, or Jim Morrison It certainly doesn t need any further effort to celebrate Hugh Hefner. On the other hand, the pieces about Sean Flynn son of Errol , William Desmond Taylor, Christopher Jones, and other people that I d never heard of were fascinating I learned something, I was introduced to people I d missed out on They weren t slightly different takes on worn out ideas about legends that have had dozens of books written about them.Better yet were the pieces that were about his life encountering Elizabeth Taylor as a youth, working on various films, his nude scenes, his crush on and seen in retrospect, stalking of a noted actress, the encounter with the lady on the bus talking about the video store they both frequented, even the part of the Jim Morrison essay about his quest to hire a psychic it shouldn t be that hard in L.A to do a s ance in a hotel room Morrison lived in He s really his best and most entertaining subject although when the subject of an essay is someone else, Haney tends to talk about himself too much He doesn t come across as someone trying to gloss over mistakes, missteps, or embarrassing moves in fact, he seems to revel in them These are honest seeming , frequently funny and charming.I have no doubt that there are plenty of people out there who will invert my rankings, or dispute them all together And they d likely be right to do so I doubt they d convince me, but you never know Most collections I read are pretty uneven This isn t the case with Death Valley Superstars, I think the quality is consistent it s just my own reaction to the chapters that are varied I d wager the same will be true for other readers. If nothing else, I think the above summary rundown demonstrates the variety of pieces in this collection and I didn t make mention of all of them One thing that is fairly consistent is the takeaway from the collection as a whole fame is fleeting, but its effect on the lives of the famous and those near them is long lasting, and rarely pleasant or beneficial Really, the whole book can be seen as a collection of cautionary tales with a persistent message stay away from Hollywood.I didn t love this book, but I really liked parts of it, and am glad I read it I can easily see many readers wondering what was wrong with me, however, and eating this thing up Disclaimer I was provided with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion, which is seen above.
