    1. After reading Tamera Alexander's, A Lasting Impression, I was browsing her blog and found a list of "Books I wish I could erase from memory and read again for the first time (since I loved them so much)," and on that list was Deborah Raney's, Beneath a Southern Sky. Since Tamera is one of my favorite authors, and I trust her book recommendations, I decided to pick this one up for my Kindle -- and I'm so glad that I did!Oh. My. Word. I LOVED it! I've never read another book quite like it, and fou [...]

    2. A missionary wife, widowed in the jungle, leaves for the states, mourning her husband’s loss. But after two years pass, bringing with the birth of her daughter, Danica moves on and remarries, only to have her “dead” husband reappear from the grave. The description of this book really made me sit and up listen. How could a story with this magnitude be brought to a satisfying conclusion?Deborah Raney is a masterful storyteller, bringing to life characters and their situations until you feel a [...]

    3. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! If you want a good clean stomach clencheris one is it. You can't put it down. If you don't like tearsn't read. Good ending though :)

    4. I loved this! I think this is some of the best Christian Fiction I have ever read. Partly because it doesn’t just focus on the characters coming to faith, but on their life after faith, the mistakes that are still made and the constant need for redemption. This is not a typical love story, it will make you feel sad, and even angry at times, but isn’t that real life? And doesn’t god work through our real life messes?Sorry if this review is a bit of mess, but I just had to stay up to finish i [...]

    5. Beneath A Southern Sky had an interesting and emotional plot. As a reader I tend to have a habit of immersing myself in the characters and placing myself in their shoes. In this case it was a very hard place to be. I struggled to read Beneath A Southern Sky because I just could not relate at all to the character’s mindset. I not only disagreed with many of her choices and responses in this book, but felt downright angry at Daria Camfield/Hunter. I felt that she was a character who didn’t rea [...]

    6. Daria is very much in love with her husband, Nate. They are both Christian missionaries in South America when he disappears and is assumed dead. She heads back to the United States certain she is carrying Nate's child. After giving birth, she gets a job in a veterinarian's office and falls in love with her new boss. A little voice in the back of her mind tells her to wait but ignoring it she accepts his proposal and gets married. Unknown to Daria, Nate didn't die. He was very sick and held priso [...]

    7. I received this book as part of a blog tour (that actually features another book, which will be reviewed later in the week). I hadn't heard of Deborah Raney before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Long story short: I'll be looking to read more of Raney's books, because this one was GOOD. I like how this is a Christian book, but it's not preachy. The references to God and the praying in the book felt natural - they fit with when I'd find such things in my own life. I like the natural Christianit [...]

    8. This is the sequel to After the Rains. In which this story takes some surprising twists. There aren't too many novels that keep me awake reading into the wee hours of the night, but this book did. The characters slipped from the pages of this book and into my heart. I experienced all their heart-wrenching emotions, agonized over every decision they had to make, and rejoiced as they triumphed by God's grace in the midst of an impossible, hopeless situation. This book is amazing and will stay with [...]

    9. Raney sticks to her roots of writing stories with heart wrenching plot lines with believable challenges. She does not pull the trigger until it is too late for a "pretty outcome". I did not like that the main plot twist is disclosed in the book description (I did not read it so for me it was a true surprise) and it is hard to review this book without spoilers. So without spoiling it let's just say that the choices we make can create impossible circumstances for which there are no perfect solutio [...]

    10. "Beneath a Southern Sky"(2001) by Deborah Raney really captured my attention and wrenched my heart. I couldn't rest until I knew what would happen and that everything would be alright. I literally cried through about 1/3 of this book. Sometimes in agonizing sorrow, sometimes in sheer happiness. I thought about it all day while I was at work, read through my lunch hour and hunched over it late at night until I was finished. This is a story of disobedience, redemption, heartache and true love. Aft [...]

    11. I received this book for the value fiction blog tour from Waterbrook Multnomah Publishers. The premise of this book sounded very interesting. It seemed like a story that I had never heard before, and that the journey would keep me reading. Unfortunately, this book just wasn't for me. I did my best, gave it my 100 page try, but I couldn't make it through this book. The writing is very, very detailed. We read almost every thought and feeling the characters have, and everything they're doing at any [...]

    12. I wasn't particularly impressed with the first half of the book -- seemed like the usual Christian romance but eventually the plot got complicated and challenging, making me eager to see how they were going to resolve the difficult situation. By the end of the book it had evolved into a moving story of sacrifice and redemption, with a challenge to trust seek God and seek His guidance throughout all our lives. I would have given it 4 stars if it hadn't taken so far into the story before it got in [...]

    13. About half way through the book I realized I didn't like any of the characters, which is sad. In a book like this, that can tug at the heartstrings, I should have felt sorrow/compassion/SOMETHING for the characters but all I felt was annoyance. I didn't like how it ended either. It seemed like the easy way out instead of Daria having to make the decision on her own.

    14. A missionary doctors wife is left in the columbian jungle agpfter her husband leaves the camp to help another community with a disease outbreak. Daris returns home and finds herself pregnant by her dead husband. Upon returning back to the states, the gets a job with a veternarian. She falls in love and marries him, only to find out nearly 3 years later that her husband had not died while treating an outbreak in a nearby community. Now, who does she choose?

    15. Had a hard time getting into this initially, but I did get hooked eventually. This is a heart-wrenching tale about listening to God's voice (or the consequences of not listening), forgiveness and sacrifice. Some parts of it are so hard to get through because you know what is coming. The ending was satisfying though, as the story seems to come full circle and God restores what was sacrificed to an extent.

    16. Seldom surprisedI read over 30 books a month and I only remember being surprised at the climax of the story 3-4 times. This book was one of those times. I loved the characters, the story, the writing, the setting, and the resolution to the problem that was revealed on the first page. I will remember this story for a very long time.

    17. Beneath A Southern Sky is a compelling story that pulls at your heart in so many different directions. It's a tale that reminds us that sometimes there are no easy answers to life's circumstances. This a well-crafted story almost impossible to put down. I can't figure out why this story wasn't made into a movie.

    18. What happens if a couple go to Columbia as missionaries, he is killed while away from their village and she is sent home. She never got to tell him she was having his child. She remarries and is pregnant with his child. Then her first husband returns from the dead. How can this be be resolved? This is a great story. I highly recommend this book.

    19. The consequences of our sin, sacrifice, and the hand of God in it all. This plotline could have been soapy and cliche, and yet, Raney makes me feel its realism, its agony, the humanness of everyone involved. And I'm left pondering the ripples and consequences of my own choices and the gentle whisper of the One who works in, around, and despite me to redeem.

    20. True LoveThis author makes you feel what the characters are going through. It's a story about a wife thinking her missionary husband was killed in a fire. She meets someone else, marries him then first husband found alive. Wonderful story of God' s grace & forgiveness.

    21. One of the best books i have read in a long time. The auther knew exactly when to enter God,s Word to open your eyes to His Majesty. Thank you Deborah for tremendous writing. This was the first book i have read of yours. Looking forward to more.

    22. I appreciated the story. It definitely tore at my heart such that I while I'm glad I read it, at the same time I almost wished I hadn't. It hung with me for quite some time after reading, taking me a while to shake the blues.

    23. Hard to put down This book is one of those that at first goes merrily along but then it takes an unexpected turn and I couldn’t put the book down until I had finished it.

    24. Upon finishing this book I realize how loosely I have thrown around the phrase, "roller coaster of emotion". Anything I have ever used that term to describe pales in comparison. This is a brilliant and unique story of one woman's journey from grief to acceptance and overcoming, only to have her world completely shattered again. Thank-you Miss Raney for taking an axe to my heart an butchering it. The pure, raw emotions this book pulled from me are too much for peanut sized heart to take. However [...]

    25. An unapologetic Christian novel that I enjoyed. Daria & her husband Nate are serving as missionaries in Columbia when the unthinkable happens -- Nate is missing after going to another village to help with a mysterious disease that is killing people. There is a fire in the medical building and all are presumed dead. When only Nate's watch is returned to Daria, she returns brokenhearted and pregnant to her family in the US. As she tries to heal and raise her new daughter, she finds friendship [...]

    26. This is my first time reading this author and actually I picked this book up and a few others at a christian bookstore because it was on sale, but don't let the price fool you. It was a great book. It was so good I could barely put it down. The dynamics of the story is something like this: Daria is happily married to Nathan. God calls them on assignment to do missionary work in a far away place and Nathan "dies" while they are there. Daria returns back home to Kansas City where she meets a hands [...]
