We were all on to a hiding to nothing with this endeavour, authors, me as Joy Division fan and me as reader. If you write stories based on the music of a sacred band and the lyrics by someone of the order of a 20th Century metaphysical poet, then to my mind apart from the tall orderness of the endeavour the stories should somehow speak and dialogue with the music lyrics The problem here is that too often the stories link to the songs whose lyrics I have memorised from 35 years of listening We were all on to a hiding to nothing with this endeavour, authors, me as Joy Division fan and me as reader. If you write stories based on the music of a sacred band and the lyrics by someone of the order of a 20th Century metaphysical poet, then to my mind apart from the tall orderness of the endeavour the stories should somehow speak and dialogue with the music lyrics The problem here is that too often the stories link to the songs whose lyrics I have memorised from 35 years of listening pleasure and even wrote a stage play about back in the 1980s are nebulous I begin to wonder even whether some of the writers are actual fans, or just called up the song they re charged with on Spotify for a quick familiarising play The established writers Eley Williams Jesse Greengrass are the best stories here, Greengrass particularly gets Joy Division with her story set in a labour camp which refers obliquely to other JD songs like They Walked In Line Williams Wilderness is the artificial plane of a skating rink the protagonist is charged with sweeping smooth of skated figured 8 s and other phonologies and offers her renowned use of language ice skates as pairs of parentheses I was put in mind of Anna Kavan s wonderful short story Ice.Ian Curtis lyrics did not create characters, but emotions that spoke of and to all humans So as soon as specific characters are created here, it s all too prosaic A PTSD war vet separated from his son by divorce meets his replacement who brings his son round for a scheduled visit I didn t care What has this got to do with the lyrics of Ian Curtis Even the second album Closer which did point at Curtis own personal mental disintegration as he screwed up his intimate relationships, still universalised the emotions it dealt in This debut album Unknown Pleasures was all about emotional landscapes, emotion through landscapes, the ruin being in the urban environment, yet the music lyrics suggesting a soaring, a breaking free of such constriction Joy Division broke free of their upbringing destined for a life of drudgery, through music yet two of the stories here were so mundane in the jobs they described someone transcribing for a farmers weekly newspaper, another in some sort of architectural or budgetary meeting what has this to do with the majesty in the face of ruin that runs through the entire album The farmers weekly one at least had the courage to try and echo Ian Curtis epilepsy in its theme, but undermined itself with the prosaic just wanting to hold down a job Now while to even achieve that with a condition like epilepsy is a huge thing, Ian Curtis was an artist who ultimately was consumed by everything, his art, his mental health, his relationships The two do not compare on any level I didn t understand Toby Litt s story though I acknowledge its artfulness David Gaffney s seemed to have nothing to do with this project at all, some fanciful tale about empty garages in which to experience the Buddhist like emptying of the world into a void The story starts off about the character buying Ian Curtis old house the one in which he hung himself in the kitchen , which may or may not have made for an interesting premise, but then we get this nonsense about garages The character dies of a heart attack, not even at his own hand The album demands majestic writing and I m afraid except for Williams and Greengrass, the stories here fell well short of honouring the songs But then how can perfection be improved upon flag 2 likesLike see review View 2 comments Jan 07, 2019 Annice rated it really liked it I stayed up till 2am to finish this book.I love short stories and this is a great collection. It wasn t
