thoughts review, this isn t it If you re looking for shorter and sweet, this is it Like the title suggests, there s a dash of mystery in each story, sweet and clean romance, great characters, characters learning to trust in God, pain and healing, hidden identities, hidden truths, uncovering the truths, danger, suspense, smuggling, doctoring, trickery, death, friends, and most importantly sweet love I liked the three couples that these stories were about They each learned to trust and help each other as their friendships began and developed into something. Thanks for this great collection Michelle Griep If any of you are fans of this author, this is a great collection for you Three different stories to curl up and enjoy, all in one sitting, or to be enjoyed individually Anyway you choose I hope you enjoy them as I did Content Clean Some moments of peril but nothing graphic The characters have some kissing scenes but nothing further The characters talk about God and turning their lives over to His guidance.I received a copy from the publisher, Barbour Books, via NetGalley All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.Happy Reading flag 13 likesLike see These were previously published in multi author anthologies The Gentleman Smuggler s LadyWhat a delightful little story I m utterly convinced Michelle Griep can t write a bad story For being short, it sure packed a punch The main characters are strong Helen and Isaac don t meet under the best circumstances, and he doesn t leave a good impression on her But then Helen finds out he s the landowner over the parish where her father lives And although Helen wants to dislike Isaac, he s not the lawless smuggler she thought him to be Actually, I m pretty sure Isaac Seaton is a friend of Ross Poldark It wasn t mentioned probably to keep Mr Poldark s privacy , but it s hard to pretend it s not there Beautiful, dramatic setting, engaging characters, a very sweet ending, and the kind of prose that grabs you with all the feels Could we perchance expect a story for Esther Seaton The Doctor s WomanI read Michelle Griep s story The Doctor s Woman and loved it Emmy is spirited and strong and she tried to do the right thing, sometimes putting herself in peril James, well James was a great leading man and I m glad he learned what was really important in the end Although it s a novella, the characters are well developed and the story is satisfying As usual, the imagery is fantastic A House of SecretsAmanda and Joseph are engaged to be married and I liked that they already had an established relationship Nonetheless, there are secrets Joseph believes he needs to keep that cause problems for both of them Joseph is a city attorney and Amanda the new chairwoman for a ladies aide society Both of them are good persons who want to help those less fortunate and try their best at doing so The storydoes a good job at depicting the opposite social settings between the rich and the poor, and both Joseph and Amanda have specific plans and goals to make things better The epilogue brought everything together and their efforts were rewarded Love, love, love the opening paragraph of chapter two classic Griep imaging I received a copy from Barbour publishing and this is my own opinion flag 8 likesLike see review View all 4 comments Nov 03, 2018 Deon marked it as to read review of staying up way too late every night of our three week Christmas break because it s impossible to go to sleep before finishing my book of the day Once you pop, you can t stop, if you know what I mean But this book is actually three books, a collection of three novellas all set in the 19th century Disconnected novellas Novellas that can be read separately I thoroughly enjoyed each one over the course of three days and was able to go to sleep by ten o clock instead of staying up to midnight and beyond. The first story, The Gentleman Smuggler s Lady, is set in Cornwall, a few decades after the renowned series Poldark begins Helen is a governess, traveling to visit her dying father who is a well loved vicar in a coastal village As she disembarks, the ship is set upon by smugglers, one of whom whisks her out of the way, keeping her safe from a horde of drunk sailors Later, when Helen meets Isaac Seaton, the young lord of the manor, she realizes that she s seen him before and must make the difficult decision whether to keep his secret The second story, The Doctor s Woman, is set during the American Civil War out on the frontier After the death of her father, Emmy is supposed to go back east But when the new doctor at the fort demands that she stay at the fort and assist him as a nurse, she finds that James Clark is a hard man to resist Under the doctor s protection, she ministers to sufferers of measles and smallpox, assisting the Sioux Indians when others would consign them to their fate The third story, A House of Secrets, is set at the end of the 19th century in St Paul, Minnesota Amanda is engaged to a city attorney known for trying to close down brothels But when she tries to enlist his help in converting an old haunted house into an orphanage, her fiance proves singularly unhelpful What secret is he hiding and why won t he confide in her My favorite story of the bunch was The Doctor s Woman It is difficult to create a lush setting and fully rounded characters in the format of a short story or a novella, and for me, this one succeeded the best in this task Michelle Griep is at home in describing the American frontier I greatly enjoyed her book released last summer, The Captured Bride, which was set during the French and Indian War In The Doctor s Woman, James Clark jumped from the page as a determined physician, manly protector, and romantic protagonist Emmy was just as appealing, making the decision to forgive the wrongs done to her by the native tribes and treat them as humans made in God s image My second favorite in the collection was The Gentleman Smuggler s Lady I loved the premise of this story A gentleman forced to resort to smuggling to provide for his starving tenantshow noble It didn t feel fully fleshed out, however, and I think it would benefit from being expanded into a full length novel All in all, this is a wonderful collection excellent for when you need a quick bite of historical fiction instead of the full meal deal Disclosure I received a complimentary review copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley All opinions expressed in this review are my own flag 3 likesLike see review Jan 31, where to start The swoony hero, the tenacious heroine who pretends everything is fine in order to make it so, the solid spiritual content, and the love story are all perfect Lots of great moments in this one, which is impressive given the length The Doctor s Woman I stand corrected the hero in this novella is even better than the last Emmaline is no slouch herself though not fearless exactly, she takes a stand when it matters, regardless of what it may cost her I found much to admire and inspire in Emmy When the two of them are on the page together, sparks fly and those around them benefit from how they drive each other to be the best they possibly can be A House of Secrets I loved how some of these very minor characters are described because it helped to paint a visual picture in my mind for example, the secretary who either sucked on lemons or the sourness inside her refused to be kept in I also appreciated the tenderness between the main characters, engaged before the beginning of the story, but still learning about each other through these pages Each story has something to make it unique but they are all well written and riveting Fans of Griep will not be disappointed, even if they don t usually read novellas, and those who enjoy historical romance, in general, should not miss this fantastic collection I received a review copy of this book from the author and publisher depart the ship and instead gets carried off by a smuggler robing them This book had me at the heartstrings right from the first page. The Second The Doctor s Woman was about Dakota Territory in 1862 Emmy Nelson has just lost her missionary father, who was a doctor Her aunt has sent a carriage for her to come live with her in the big city The wild west is no place for a lady Emmy has loved living this one and the smoldering undercurrents between these two Isaac certainly reminded me of my favorite character in Ross Poldark and his vibrant masculinity The Doctor s Woman You have a healing gift, daughter It s not for man to chide what God s given Never be ashamed of what you are After the death of her doctor father, Emmy Nelson is called upon to nurse a soldier back to health at Fort Snelling where she meets Dr James Clark They have differing methods of healing that oftentimes clash and cause tension between the two Especially when it comes to caring for Sioux Indians who take shelter within the forts walls, the exact tribe that killed her fianc Can these two find a way to work together I loved this one because Emmy is a woman far advanced in the medical world with her knowledge of herbal remedies She would have been looked down upon by society because of it In a place where her skills are desperately needed, it matters not James takes a while to realize she s a valuable asset not only to his practice, but to his life I really liked watching these two fall for each other the promise of forever waiting at the end A House of SecretsEngaged couple Amanda and Joseph have the same desire to help the poor destitute of the city Hers by opening a school providing much needed education to poor children and him by rescuing women who want to escape the brothel But he holds a secret that could cost him the love of his life Can he learn to trust her enough to tell her the truth These were the perfect couple for each other Both of them have big hearts and the means to help where ever needed Joseph has than a surface reason for helping women and he must overcome his fear to allow Amanda complete access to his heart When it s true love, it will cover a multitude of sins it ended very abruptly with a question left hanging regarding some of the smugglers final outcome I liked both of the main characters.Tea Quote Come in, come in Take a cup o nettle tea The Doctor s Woman A Carol Award Winner Dakota Territory, 1862Emmy Nelson, daughter of a missionary doctor, and Dr James Clark, city doctor aspiring to teach, find themselves working side by side at Fort Snelling during the Dakota Uprising That is when the real clash of ideals begins.MY THOUGHTS I enjoyed this story with Sioux Indians, rough territory and practicing various types of medicine in the old days It wrapped up nicely.Spiritual Quote You have a healing gift, daughter It s not for man to chide what God s given Never be ashamed of what you are A House of Secrets St Paul, Minnesota, 1890Ladies Aide Chairman, Amanda Carston resolves to clean up St Paul s ramshackle housing, starting with the worst of the worst a haunted house that s secretly owned by her beau a home that s his only means of helping brothel girls escape from the hands of the city s most infamous madam.MY THOUGHTS Amanda has no idea her fianc has any connection to the house Joseph Blake is keeping the secret to protect her and the girls, avenge his sister and also thwart an evil city councilman who, in my mind, looked like the walrus from Disney s Alice in Wonderland singing Cabbages and Kings Mental anxiety over the happenings plus romance of the sweet couple Wrapped up nicely.Romantic Quote The warmth of his brown eyes reached out and held her, cherishing her as the most valuable of God s creations Her The sole focus of such tenderness She wished she could package it up and carry it around all day CAUTIONARY NOTE A few writings might push the envelope for some, so just a head s up Thievery is wrong Indeed A principle he knew as intimately as a lover one no honest man should ever have to bed half burned timbers reached into the night sky, dark on dark, like blackened bones trying to escape from a grave bricks holding in secrets like a jealous lover, guarding rumors of foul play Most shameless maples had already disrobed for their coming marriage to winter, but a few discreet maidens refused to shed their orange and red leaves I downloaded a copy of this book through Net Galley via the publisher with no fee and no compensation in the hopes of an honest review.Connect with the author at Michelle intrigue of the title. The Doctor s Woman The Gentleman Smuggler s Lady I don t know what it is about rogues the Robin Hood type highwaymen, smugglers, pirates, and the like, but when one of these non funerals go hand in hand, but the story was entertaining and by far the most deserving of the intrigue of the title. The Doctor s Woman Having studied a fair amount of Minnesota history, I was excited to see a story about the Dakota War of 1862, or rather, the aftermath It was a war that never should have happened it easily could have been prevented, had the US fulfilled its ends of the treaties and there were atrocities committed on both sides, but the worst of which being the revenge the US took against the Dakota, innocents and all.I don t think the novella does justice to the tragedy of 1,600 people mostly women, children, and elderly pushed together into a river bottom concentration camp over the course of a Minnesota winter, where several hundred died of disease in those few months alone But it is a nice story of a doctor and a woman with the heart of a doctor working together to help ALL those in their care, not just the ones popular opinion would have them help No actual mystery to this story.House of Secrets Joseph Blake wins above even the rogue for my favorite hero of the collection He s charming, honorable, and passionate, and he doesn t take life too seriously, except where it matters There is intrigue to this story as well, as Joseph is trying to take down a brothel while hiding his involvement in getting prostitutes out of the business I prefer Griep s full length fiction to the novellas, where there is room to flesh out the story and world, but these do convey her masterful use of language The title isn t the most fitting I ve seen regarding novella collections, but the stories are all entertaining Thank you Barbour and NetGalley for the complimentary e book I was not required to write a positive review, and all opinions are my own flag 1
