first book No spoilers for Lady Smoke ahead but if you haven t read Ash Princess, I can t promise anything, so you are officially warned. This book picks up right after the end of book one which was great Theodosia has escaped from the Kaiser, she s taken back her title of Queen, and is now looking for a way to get her throne and Astrea back for her people The biggest I can t say only problem is, Theo doesn t have an army big enough to take on the Kalovaxians but Dragonsbane has made a deal that will help her get one Theo has shown some growth since the first book Not only is she learning about herself, but she is putting her years of experience in court to good use Her years of being under the thumb of the Kaiser has helped her in that most people underestimate her, and it absolutely helps when she is in Sta Crivero See, the deal Dragonsbane, Theo s aunt, has made is that Theo will choose a husband even though that has never been Astrea s way There are a lot of secrets and when Theo finds herself in the midst of a dangerous situation again , she has to figure out who she can truly trust and clearly it isn t everyone There are some murders happening around Theo and her suitors are the targets, but the question is who is responsible Unfortunately, someone in her entourage is accused and Theo has to figure out how to get them out of trouble on top of everything else that is going on Speaking of her entourage, Theo s shadows are some of my favorite characters and I loved seeing how her relationships with each of them evolved over the span of this book I m not going to lie, there is a love triangle in this book and if there is one thing that had me on the fence, it is that mostly because it felt off to me I mention this because Blaise, while one of Theo s oldest friends, never really felt like than a friend to me, even though it came across as something Heron is great and even though he disagreed with Theo, he still supported and helped her I get where he is coming from and can t blame him for his feelings toward the Kalovaxians And then you have Art she doesn t cut Theo any slack and Theo is better for it, I think Art challenges Theo and pushes her to be someone than what the Kaiser made her Dragonsbane is one of the other characters I will briefly mention here It is clear she has her own agenda and I don t know if I trust her even now that I have finished this installment I get it, she has had her own issues but I don t like how she treats Art and that is all I don t think I mentioned it yet but if you read Ash Princess, you know how Theo s relationship developed with Prinz Soren You also know then, that she kidnapped him and while he started out as her hostage, it is clear their relationship isn t as simple as that I have to be honest here and say that he is the one I feel is the better fit for Theo Even though she was lying to him almost the entire time in Ash Princess, things shift a bit in Lady Smoke for them and Theo begins to rely on Soren to help and guide her Even though she tries to hide from or one could say avoid her feelings, she can t for very long and Soren tells her how he feels as well but the thing I love about it is that he s realized she is than Thora, the girl who needs to be protected. As things come to a head in this book, it s clear something big will happen I have to admit I didn t see what happened really coming at least not yet Because of that, I am very interested in seeing what happens next for all characters involved Sebastian does a great job of building out the world in this book as well In book one, we really were stuck within the Kalovaxian court so getting outside allowed me to get a better picture of the world outside of Astrea and characters that inhabit it So I can t say much here without potentially giving something away, so I won t If you enjoyed book one, I think you will love how Sebastian continues this story I will definitely be picking up the next book in this series as soon as I can get my hands on it Seriously, I need to get on that waiting list If you re looking for a fantasy that has a bit of mystery, a bit of romance, and a great story with interesting because I want to stress how good this was, how surprising it was to read a middle book that impressed You all should know me well enough by now that I can struggle with fantasy books but I did not with this one I enjoyed it immensely. While I do gush about the wonder that is the a second book that amazes, the overall plot was not overly unique or complicated While there is a lot going on within the plot, it could seem like too much to some readers so keep that in mind Here are some examples Complex politics, secrets, betrayal, fighting for the rights to the kingdom, and I won t talk about the romance because it was not the part of the plot I chose to focus on It did not do much for me, if I m being honest However, Sebastian took what could have been a mediocre story and put her touch on it to make it enjoyable I was hooked and couldn t put this down until the last page Then I screamed because I won t know how it turned out until next year.Theo or Theodosia was still our protagonist and her character arc continued to amaze me She was complex, flawed, and relatable I won t beat the dead horse that is how much I found myself connecting with her character What I will talk about are the rest of the characters and how much they added to the story Thankfully the full cast helped give this story a much needed depth and fullness. While my review does sound rather vague, I did that in the hopes it would peek your interest in reading this series if you have not already But if you have and were on the fence about the second book, I hope I have pushed you to the side of the fence that causes you to pick this one up I do not believe you will be disappointed flag 3 likesLike see review Oct 14, 2018 Kailey Steward rated it it was amazing Honestly The perfect sequel So think my biggest problem was that even though I do love these characters I couldn t connect with them on a personal level like I did in Ash Princess In the first book I was super invested in Theo and Soren and Blaise and their quests In Lady Smoke I was very bleh about my connection with them To be brutally honest I really didn t care for the giant quest they had to go on If I can t connect with characters I am going to have a hard time reading the book I felt like I spent a majority of Lady Smoke dragging myself through the pages I really didn t like the fact that Theo has to find a husband in order to defeat the Kaiser I get that it is a plot point to the story can move forward But girlpower Plus, I ship Theo and Soren still so the whole Theo having to find a husband that isn t Soren wasn t my favorite thing in the world Still, there is something to be said about someone seeing your darkest parts and accepting you anyway Overall I just really didn t love Lady Smoke as much as I Laura Sebastian did not disappoint with Lady Smoke as Theo and her company worked to take on the Kaiser and confront their messy emotions Similar to Ash Princess, Lady Smoke was a slower paced book with a considerable amount of action taking place in the last one hundred pages I had compared Ash Princess to the Winner s Curse series because the plot didn t focus on an all out rebellion, instead it teased out strategy and alliances Lady Smoke gave me even Winner s Curse vibes, especially with its explosive ending Characters Thora had undergone a major transformation in becoming Theo in Ash Princess In Lady Smoke, Theo had a bit confidence but she was still struggling with her identity and the image she portrayed to her people I truly fell in love with how Sebastian wrote Theo s running dialogue because it felt true to a 16 year old girl who had to reclaim her throne She was insecure at times, she was confident at times, and she was afraid at times One aspect I enjoyed was Theo s desperation to not become the tyrant who kept her under control for 10 years and how she tempered her strategies to ensure she didn t lose herself Ash Princess had a love triangle that seemed central to the storyline and I was worried that my ship wouldn t sail With Lady Smoke, I was understanding of Theo s indecision when it came to Blaise and Soren and could see how both characters brought her something that she needed Don t worry, I think a decision was made and my ship sailed.Worldbuilding The world of Ash Princess was exciting as it was filled with political alliances and misdeeds The majority of the action in the sequel took place in Sta Crivero, a rich and greedy country with an even greedier ruler.Theo and her Shadows were invited by the king in an attempt to find Theo a spouse, and in return they would promise her their army to face the Kaiser It was the perfect setting to get to know the world at large and how all of these countries interacted withe each other I m sure we for the year I m extremely pleased with the events of Lady Smoke and thought it was an excellent and exciting sequel It was so easy to fall back into this world The fact that I read the entire thing in one day really says a lot about how engaging the story and characters were I was completely engrossed by the book Theo continues to be a well rounded protagonist Her character is so well written and I really enjoy the fact that her point of view is written in first person, as it makes it so much easier to connect with her She s a realistic, complex heroine not without flaws, and capable of making mistakes She struggles between putting the needs of her country, Astrea, ahead of her own personal wants, but matures and grows as the story evolves It was also great to see character development not just in our main character, but in the supporting characters as well We learn a lot about Theo s friends and the people she s chosen to surround herself with throughout the book In Ash Princess, there was a very blatant love triangle and as I ve said before, it was one that I actually did not mind, as I think Laura Sebastian handled it extremely well The romance is actually less prominent in Lady Smoke, with a greater focus on the plot and action, but it s not missing completely Enemies to lovers is my personal brand, so it s obvious which side I favor The love triangle is not quite through yet, however it seemed to me like it was beginning to resolve itself One of Theo s relationships had much development and growth, compared to her relationship with the other character which remained in stasis throughout the book Lady Smoke was full of forward moving action, a little bit of mystery, and plenty of character development to make this a great sequel capable of Living with the Kaisers and his court these past 10 years has given her plenty of time to get to know her enemies weaknesses Shes learned how to play head games and inflict damage from the best, they just never expected her to turn it on them I loved seeing her put King Estrio in his place, especially about the whole virginity test. She also has a loyal group of friends that she can depend on Im not sure why she still calls them her shadows besides it being a cooler name than guardians Arts prickly attitude rubbed me the wrong way at times, but I still thought she was a great character Who can blame her with a mother like yhe infamous pirate Dragonsbane She isnt afraid to speak her mind and give Theo her honest opinion The other guardian Heron was sweet I liked how he respected Theos decisions even when he didnt agree with them His flirting with Eric was super cute and I wish we got of it I saw Blaise as of a childhood friend than a romantic interest and would have been content with a platonic relationship. We do have a love triangle, but that trope doesn t bother me Despite having his flaws I was totally rooting for Soren Theo isnt the only one who the Kaiser has messed up Being his heir hasnt made for an easy childhood There was just something about the way Soren cared for Theo that melted my heart He seemed her equal than the other love interest I also felt like he respected her I didnt trust her aunt and the way she kept pushing for Theo to marry Seeing Theo reunite with the woman who took care of her all these years under the Kaisers thumb was an emotional experience Shes family to her than her own aunt I liked the story about the fire bird she shared with Theo and how it related back to the title. The world was dark and gritty Ive always been a fan of crystals so I like the idea of them having power in Theos country I also enjoyed exploring a new kingdom and how they rely on technology instead of magic I love pirate books so I was excited to have some of that incorporated at the beginning of the novel We also get themes of anticolinization I predicted some of the plot twists, but I still enjoyed the whole murder mystery I was a bit worried at first with the whole forced to marry plot line, but I liked how the author handled it The writing has a incredibly raw and emotional tone to it There were so many quotable lines I cant wait for the characters psychology and innermost woes, it felt so genuine and unique Theo s existential problems particularly are so specific to this world and her character I loved the world building and the ways Sebastian continued to write a progressive Fantasy series that is deeply relevant to the colonial world we live in today I will say that the romance didn t get any better in this book Don t get me wrong, I m a sucker for a good love story But this love triangle business is old And I still don t feel like I got to know Blaise enough that I care about his end of the triangle or believe his wondering how we were going to wait for the next book.Lady Smoke jumps right in where Ash Princess finished, on Dragonsbane s pirate ship Now that Theo has escaped the Kaiser, she needs find a way to take back her palace and home, and to help her people Unfortunately, although she has reclaimed her title as queen, she has no army to fight the Kaiser with Dragonsbane proposes a plan for Theo to marry into an influential country, in exchange for them helping to win the war Astrean queens have never married and Theo desperately wants to find another way to save her people, but it seems like her options are running out.Lady Smoke is full of intrigue and twists A lot of the book is dedicated to figuring out who is keeping secrets, and what their motivations are I enjoyed getting to know Theo s shadows even , they are some of my favourite characters in the series As we saw at the end of book one, there is a bit of a love triangle going on, and of this is explored in book two Neither of the boys are an easy path for Theo, especially when her main objective is saving Astrea, plus, she s meant to be choosing an influential husband to see that through Although this is not a short book, I read it in two days I just couldn t put it down I feel like there were less shocking aspects to this book the torture and mistreatment in book one was intense and instead we got to see world building and tactical planning Theo has definitely grown as a character and I had to keep reminding myself that she is still really only a child, trying to make decisions for her people We also learn a little about Theo s mother and her aunt, Dragonsbane, plays a large role in Lady Smoke Once again, the ending left me desperate for the next book If you enjoyed Ash Princess, I think Lady Smoke is a fantastic continuation of the story and I can t wait for the next instalment MY BLOG INSTAGRAM flag 1 likeLike see review Jan 21, 2019 Nicki Markus rated it really liked it review of another edition amazing and part of the plot opened it up for other countries to be involved I loved that we got to see the customs of the other nations Some old faces came back and there is one specific one that I can t wait to freely talk about Theo s feelings for said character were good, but lingering resentments made Theo that much relatable From the moment that Theo fled to safety in the last book, she basically went into queen mood and though she navigates HOW to do it and struggles with figuring out what kind of Queen she will be, I loved how she was ready to embrace it, and everything that comes with it good and bad I do wish Theo was able to express her feelings freely, I LIVED for the moments that she was so unflinching about the things she wanted and importantly the things that have happened to her Everyone, even those closest to her, wanted to beat around the bush while she went straight for the kill when talking about all the horrors done to her And the love trianglewhile I won t give spoilers, I think the mystery to this is solved in this book Though I understand Theo s feelings, I was put off by how manipulative she had become with the feelings of Soren and Blaise And while sometimes she did it because she thought it would help in her bid to save her country, most of the time she did it for herself Normally, I wouldn t be too bothered about this, but the fact that she constantly battled her detrimental thoughts about the characters, she decides over and over to ignore them I believe people fictional and otherwise can change, but idk I feel like there are lines people don t get a pass for crossing she chooses over and over to ignore the those crossed lines While Theo grew, there was one character that had an even bigger growth Artemisia We got to see another side of her and it solidified the feelings I have for this character I will riot if any harm comes to her Lady Smoke is longer than Ash Princess and I felt as if it didn t need to be Obviously new plots were introduced to get them to where they needed, but I felt like many chapters were just full of fillers And while I mostly enjoyed the story, I sometimes felt like it was a chore to continue reading some parts A lot of secondary characters could have gotten page time certain situations could have gotten attention instead of the mundane things The last couple chapters are what really saved the book from becoming JUST a gateway from point A to point B Also saved it from being a 3 star book The very last page of the bookwow I can honestly say that it contains my favorite quote out of the series thus far As much as I wish I could rate this the 5 stars I gave the first book, 4 out of 5 stars from me I m so excited for the next book flag Like see review Jan 01, 2019 Stephanie Ward rated young adult fantasy series that will leave readers begging for I enjoy reading fantasy but I never seem to get that deep into most of them, but I slipped right inside this world and didn t want to come back out Its world building was wonderful and instantly transported me back into Theo s world.Again, the plot wasn t completely unique, but it s really hard to come by any novel that you can say is truly original any There was a lot happening during the story a dominating kingdom that made slaves of and killed the previous people that lived there, intricate court politics with backstabbing and traitors, secrets alliances and treason And of course forbidden romance Although these plot traits can be found in a ton of other novels, the author put her own stamp on them and made them her own And I honestly loved every part of it I don t want to go deep into the plot and every single thing that happened, but it s full of everything I listed above and I found it exciting and I was reading as fast as I could to see what was going to happen next The author also used lots of detailed descriptions and vivid imagery to really bring this world and the characters to life I felt like I was right beside Theo the entire time and experienced everything along with her.The main character Theodosia or Theo continues to be fascinating and well rounded She was a complex and realistic character, and I immediately connected with her right from the beginning Her character really changes, grows, and matures throughout the story and I loved watching it happen She comes into her own and continues to become the strong queen her people need One other thing I have to mention is that the author used the first person point of view and told the story from Theo s perspective This is by far my favorite writing style and I m so happy she chose to write it this way It made connecting and identifying with the characters especially Theo so easy and made it almost impossible not to fall into her world The secondary characters were also rounded and had unique personalities and flaws, which made them all realistic as well I enjoyed getting to know each of them on a personal level and I hope to keep learning about them in the coming books I can t wait to see where the next book will take Theo and the rest of the gang and what obstacles they ll face I very highly recommend this book to fans of the genre and readers looking for a realistic fantasy with a very strong female lead Disclosure I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review flag Like see review Jan 08, 2019 might involve a political marriage and will definitely involve plenty of sacrifice so she can save the kingdom she was meant to rule. This book was one of the best sequels I ve ever read I really enjoyed Ash Princess and was excited to pick up Lady Smoke though the title was as ephemeral as smoke to me I kept forgetting it The novel did not disappoint Sebastian moves the story along in a logical and exciting way, keeping the adventure going while adding new elements to the world The book felt like the second half of a movie, taking the story further and doing the unexpected We learn about other countries during a section of the book that reminded me of The Princess Diaries 2 Royal Engagement don t pretend you haven t seen it , and Sebastian adds mythology and intrigue to the magic surrounding the gemstones and the blessings from the gods I really appreciated the characters in this novel Sebastian expands on the backgrounds and personalities of the characters we ve come to love and at times it s very moving A certain character who was drastically altered by the events of the first novel returns in a terrifying and surprising way, and let me tell you, the twist near the end is very satisfying Sebastian, thankfully, also doesn t draw out the romance, although she has created an odd love triangle that is barely addressed Neither of the men care about Theo s affections for the other Neither is upset with her for her unwillingness to address the situation I would be, but I m also very okay with the romance being put aside for the action And action there is The book is a little over 500 pages and Sebastian keeps a breakneck pace throughout it I really appreciate that Lady Smoke and Ash Princess before it doesn t shy away from violence or war Theo is trying to regain a country that s been taken over She s going to see and do some brutal things, and the reader is going to have to face them along with her It may not be a cheery book, but the hope that Theo brings to her people is brought to the reader too When the novel ends, you know that Theo will get what she wants than anything else her kingdom back and her people free Ultimately, nothing else matters to her, which is a refreshing change from some other young adult novels. If you liked Ash Princess, you will love Lady Smoke, and if you re a fan of novels like Red Queen, Graceling, or Throne Theo meets many potential suitors who, in exchange for her hand in marriage, will give her a big enough army to take down the Kaiser and reclaim Astrea What I liked about all these suitors is that we are given the chance to learn about the other countries and why none assisted Astrea in that time of need ten years ago And, of course, Theo s heart still battles with her feelings for Blaise and Soren one she knows she loves and one she denies her feelings.Theo is still playing a dangerous game in Lady Smoke, using her wits to outsmart those who underestimate her and treat her as a China doll The only main difference is that she s playing multiple games with her aunt, the Kaiser, and King Etristo She will have to prove to them all that she is strong enough to be Queen But she also understands that she has to lose than she did when she was in the possession of the Kaiser, so she must be choose her battles As the reader, I was rooting for Theo to come out victorious in her battles I want to see her take her country back.In Lady Smoke, Theo discovers about herself and what she s capable of, and that power, that realization, is going to set up the third book to begin with a bang especially with THAT ending She battles with her actions as Queen she starts to realize that some of her actions are similar to the Kaiser and that slowly scares her Not only does she have to figure out how to get Astrea back, she also has to determine how to get the Kaiser s voice out of her head But her actions as Queen are not the only thing keeping her up at night How she left things back in Astrea with the Kaiser haunt her and bring a surprising realization to what she is actually capable of and who she is potentially meant to be.Overall, Lady Smoke provides a wonderful sequel to Ash Princess, one that will not disappoint Lady Smoke leads up to what will be a heart pounding end to an amazing trilogy Queen Theodosia is an ember burning among flames, and she won t stop until the
