is a powerhouse in her own right, and her newest book from SD Publishing, A Sparrow Stirs Its Wings, is a testament to strength of the human spirit after tragedy. In her introduction, Finch recounts her trials and tribulations as a wide eyed, innocent child, and the sexual abuse which transformed her However, rather than wallow in her circumstance, Finch has wrangled her darkest recesses into a ray of light, which is apparent from the first entry, The Innocent is Haunting We were timid girls, that hadn t known it untilwe weren t any Taught how to keep our lips closedand our legs open, too small to know why until the firsthit, too small to know how to stop the next. Most entries I hesitate to call them poems, because they are closer to the intimate thoughts you d find in one s personal journal are short and sweet This brevity helps the reader flow between darkness and light, beauty and ugliness, human and monstrosity Works like I Become the Sun are a sharp contrast to the innumerable references to her ordeals Little Girl, Preserved , Lava Veins There is never a call for sympathy, to give Finch pity for her past Instead, she looks to the future, no matter how often she caresses darkness. Her work with Bruised but Not Broken should not be overlooked, either, for it is a sense of community she has fostered which translates into Sparrow As much as she is its curator, she is also its greatest beneficiary, and the bond with her followers is readily apparent here Climbing out of the tomb you buried yourself in when you decided you were no longer enoughFlying higher than your fear and choosing every day to believe in yourself and all that you deserveStaring at your own reflection and recognising the child that s always been within youHonouring her What It Means to Be BraveFinch is only beginning her career with books, but given the power and love behind Sparrow, it will not be long before she is a household name in poetry and writing circles As someone who finds comfort in her outlook on social media, Sparrow is a true pleasure to read I would not pass up the opportunity to own it.Review by Nicholas Gagnier flag 2 likesLike see review Aug 04, 2018 light. She divides the book into two parts In Part One, the first section is Broken Eggshells I can t think of a fitting title She details her story with softness, but follows it up with a crush of words that would leave a delicate foundation shattered I was particularly drawn to page 35, to the poem called Girls Are Not For Beating There is something powerful in the fragility Something incredibly courageous I take rejection like a winnersmile through the bruises, keep your secrets in my throat, along with your name.I won t speak you into existence In the second section of part one, Wings, there is this brush of realization and acceptance Or that s how I read it The knowledge that not all hands are rough and not all hearts are gentle Some things just are, or were, or will be But, underneath all that, hope still exists.Part Two is called Flight, and it carries grace in its wings Each poem describes part of the journey They sing of survival and spirituality On page 104, I fell in love with the piece called You Are All Glory She preaches to herself and to the reader, imploring us to rise above and take back the power that others tried to claim I also loved all the references to space, and the moon, and the lights, and something tells me that if souls are stars, it ll be Rachel s that shines the brightest.Rachel s ability to turn all the trauma into triumph is incredible The book is poignant and powerful She is an inspiration to those whose broken wings need to re learn how to fly I look forward to reading from her flag Like see review Aug 25, 2018 Melody rated it it
