this entire book More than anyone else The sweetest most brilliant person to ever exist He was funny, lovable, caring and just downright amazing. Now I probably should move on before I write three whole paragraphs on why Jack King is an amazing main character The story was absolutely intriguing I loved every bit of it Towards the end it felt a bit repetitive but even then this book was already on my favorites list I haven t laughed this hard in a long while The book was witty, fun and heartfelt.Jack makes multiple attempts at changing events Each attempt leaves something amiss in Jack s life The most important part of all this was him trying to find the balance between all the things that he holds dear In a way this is about Jack s love life but it also is a lot than that It also includes his friendship with his two best friends, Jillian and Franny, and his parents I loved the mix of contemporary romance sci fi vibes that I got.I loved Jillian and Franny just as much as Jack and Kate Jack s parents were also so very supportive and understanding, and the book just left me so warm and fuzzy I loved the representation and I loved the whole dynamic of the story I would blog ARC kindly provided by Katherine Tegen Books in exchange for an honest review I wish I could ve loved this It had a great message and made a lot of great social commentary, but it needed to be 100 pages less than it was If there was some further editing condensing the plot particularly the slow beginning then I would ve adored this I m excited for others to read this book and hopefully see themselves as the hero of a story for once Which is definitely what Jack is As Reynolds stated in this book, it s wonderful to have an author of colour writing stories where they are present and given positive representations That s reason enough to pick up this book, in my opinion.Jack is visiting his future college over the weekend before he meets Kate on some dirty steps during a party They form an instant connection and continue to stay in contact despite being an hour and a half away from each other After Kate stands Jack up on his prom night, he s heartbroken Except, Kate calls him weeks later and tells Jack that she s dying and wants her last moments to be with him Jack immediately races to see her, but he falls down, hits his head, and wakes up back on the steps in which he first met Kate He finds that time has somehow gone backwards and he s given the opportunity to redo his months with Kate First of all, this isn t exactly about the romance Sure, most of the time travel revolves around Kate and her death, but there are also actions to be rectified with his friends and family After Jack redoes his first attempt, he finds that spending time with Kate means the deterioration of his friendships with Jillian and Franny, while his dynamic with his parents worsens I liked that it didn t only focus on the romance since I wasn t entirely sold on Jack and Kate at the beginning since they d only known each other for a few months Regarding the romance, I could feel the chemistry off the page, but I just wasn t convinced that they were in love Sure, Jack has to relive them dating for six months over and over, but Kate sees him as a stranger through each regeneration I just felt that Kate was distant from the audience at times and the focus was on the other characters impacting Jack s life.Jack was an interesting main character to follow Normally it s difficult for me to relate to the male perspective, but I liked his inner monologue Jack is hilarious and insightful It was intriguing to see the different ways he decided to interact with Kate and his friends or family during the different tries and how these would subsequently play out. That being said, I loved the side characters They were just as fleshed out as Jack and Kate were, maybe even than the latter Franny Francisco has a distant father who has never shown up for him or shown an interest in his son Jillian s father left her and she s struggling to live with her vacant mother There were specific scenes about Franny s dynamic with his father in the last third of the book that was incredibly heartbreaking to see played out, which made me appreciate his character even In fact, I d love to see a companion novel following Franny and Jillian because their story didn t seem to wrap up Jack s mother and father were also wonderful characters to follow since they were so supportive of their son and welcoming to his friends that didn t have the same love and respect of their own.My main point I think this would have been better as a movie instead of a book I can easily imagine the first 30% of this book condensed in the first 3 minutes of a film with a voiceover from Jack explaining his life, his friends, and his first encounter with Kate However, we re given a story that drags and introduces new subplots for the first third of the book without actually delving into the story explained in the synopsis The problem is I was expecting a quick, action packed read where we get to see multiple attempts at keeping Kate alive, but instead it s drawn out for the full couple of months where they first got together each time To be frank, it s too slow.Overall, I d recommend this to you purely for the unique story and wonderful representation If we re getting technical, the writing is very reminiscent of Becky Albertalli and John Green Therefore, I d highly suggest you pick this up if you re a fan of those authors Twitter Blog flag 4 likesLike see review fascinating part is that Jack learns he can make different decisions, and his choices will not only affect Kate s life but will have sometimes disastrous consequences for everyone else around him too He s caught in a tangle of possibilities without a clear right direction, making for an intriguing novel that kept me guessing until the end flag 4 likesLike see review Aug 19, 2018 Kelli Gleiner is until Kate dies, and Jack returns to moments just before he meets Kate, again Here, Jack faces multiple choices as he s continuously thrown back to the past when Kate dies He aims to stop Kate from dying, but that doesn t come without consequences And the choices he makes turns deadly elsewhere, and he has to figure out what he s willing to let go to save everyone he loves Opposite of Always took a while to grow on me I knew it was going to become a bit repetitive, considering the plot, but Reynold s debut was a sweet coming of age story with a fun time travelling twist After meeting Kate at a party, Jack embarks on an adorable romance which is cut short and restarts itself when Kate dies He sees this as a second chance, another chance to save Kate, but every time he changes something to help Kate, some even drastic happens in the result of it Each return to the past has devastating impacts if Jack s not careful And because of this, the plot builds very slowly, but I found that Opposite of Always was charming than I had expected. The dialogue is witty and fun, especially with Jack and his peers His relationship with his family was dynamic and nuanced Jack is very loveable, and a well rounded character His voice is genuine and real As well as Kate, something new is revealed about her with every loop The plot mainly revolves around Jack s choices and the consequences to said choices, and it was interesting to see how drastic the decisions ended up and how they differed from previous times based on small choices that seem insignificant Overall, an exciting novel about choices and living Opposite of Always is charming, witty and fun Contemporary isn t really up my alley, but I definitely recommend flag 2 likesLike see review Jan 10, 2019 Angel rated it it was selfishness, of first love, this book was surprisingly funny Like, laugh out loud funny Justin Reynolds has a real skill for funny banter and the conversations between just about everyone are full of humor, intentional or unintentional, subtle or overt, and I really enjoyed it It helped to balance out the sadness, but it also functioned as a vehicle for Jack s personality and, in turn, the personalities of Franny and Jillian his best friends and Kate the beautiful, funny, dying Kate In fact, I really liked Jack and Kate together in every different timeline scenario that they were in It was cute and corny and nerdy and completely adorable The type of YA relationship that makes you smile like a fool but also one that feels attainable and not full of angst I mean, yes, there s angst The literal premise of the story is that Jack has to go back in time to stop her from dying But the angst and her illness isn t so much a part of their relationship as in, say, The Fault in Our Stars Kate is sick, but neither of them lets that stop them In fact, they focus even on the present and the time they have together every time they re with one another I also quite liked Jack himself I related to him so much in how he phrased things so nerdily, like how things mattered not It s nice because I ve never really gotten to read a chill black kid who talks like that in fiction Who has multiple facets to himself and isn t just a stereotypical nerdy black kid i.e the antithesis to the even stereotypical black gangster and or obvious black jock who leads the team s to victory I also really enjoyed Kate She was cool and funny and chill and felt like someone who I would want to be friends with in real life It was helpful, too, since the sheer of likeability of all of the characters made the repetition of a time travel plot bearable for me, anyway, because I m a hardcore character person Also, a special shoutout to Franny who kinda had the worst luck in every timeline and who my heart goes out to because he s basically a cinnamon roll of a human being flag 1 likeLike see review Jan 20, 2019 Sophie Kean rated it really liked it review of another edition This was such a
