brilliant and hilarious, as well as bold and fearless She will do whatever it takes to get what she wants I liked her immediately and got wrapped up in this spy game, as well as the story of family, love, intrigue and vengeance While I loved the character of Beatriz, I adored the character of Eduardo as well and would love to find out about him one of these days hint hint When We Left Cuba is the second book in the Perez family series by Chanel Cleeton, with Next Year in Havana being the first While I liked Next Year in Havana I absolutely LOVE Beatriz Perez s story I found her to be compelling, funny, intelligent and sassy Perhaps it is her independence or her ability to face danger so willingly, whatever it is about her, it grabbed me Here, Chanel Cleeton does an incredible job intertwining Cuban History with American History all the while creating a suspenseful, romantic read I highly recommend this to fans of historical fiction and those who love reading a good espionage forced them to leave everything behind in Cuba Beatriz has a lot of anger towards the man responsible for all of the turmoil in her home country, Fidel Castro, and so she agrees to work as a spy for the CIA and infiltrate Castro s inner circle She soon gets quite an education on the dirty side of politics for both countries and also manages to get caught up in a forbidden love affair It s fair to say she will be forced to make a lot of tough choices, some with lasting consequences I was slightly worried before reading this that it was going to read too much like a spy novel, which isn t really my thing However, while Beatriz working for the CIA is definitely part of the story, there are other facets of her life that are explored as well Overall there really was a nice balance to the story I was drawn the most to Beatriz and her love life but I also enjoyed learning some of the historical facts regarding what was going on between Cuba and the United States during this time It was also You shouldn t be anyone s second choice Don t you want to be someone s first choice I don t want to be anyone s choice I want them to be mine WHEN WE LEFT CUBA was a dazzling portrayal of a strong willed and self assured Cuban refugee whose self appointed mission to make Fidel Castro pay for the destruction of her country and family became her sustenance It was her passion for love and revenge that helped her survive each day she was away from her homeland, and it was that drive that simultaneously allowed her to be true to herself and consequently, pushed away the ones she loved.Beatriz Perez was a heroine in the days when being a formidable woman was not in vogue Women from this era were encouraged to be demure so they could attract a husband But Beatriz would not be overlooked She would not shy away and hide her desires She would fight for what she believed even if that meant giving up a future with the only man she ever loved.Nicholas Randolph Preston III was a rising star on the political scene He was a sitting US Senator whose political aspirations would one day have him running for the Presidency He had everything he could ever want except the one thing he could never have, Beatriz Perez it was her passion to bring about justice in Cuba that could be his political undoing He struggled with his need to have her in his life and his sense of duty to his country The two were mutually exclusive, to have one, meant to give up the other Together, they shared secrets, laughter, and each others bed But being together was never easy Nicholas and Beatriz had to hide their love for one another, which meant secret rendezvous and stolen moments Ultimately, there was too much between them There were too many battles, too many wars to fight, and too many wrongs to right Perhaps had they met at a different time It seems remarkably stupid to give my heart to a man who can never be mine Cleeton is immensely talented She brilliantly brought her characters to life Beatriz was strong and full of passion Her sense of duty was thought provoking, and her sense of self was admirable Cleeton could have easily allowed a man to derail Beatriz or have a man fix her problems But Cleeton stayed true to Beatriz s character, making her story all the powerful Nicholas s character was equally well crafted and admirable He was a dichotomy Nicholas was a very powerful man, yet he could not and would not try to bring Beatriz to heal Their love story was heart wrenching, it was beautiful, it was timeless I love you I will never love anyone as much as I love you I have no doubt WHEN WE LEFT CUBA will be at top of my Favorites for 2019 An epic, unforgettable love story, WHEN WE LEFT CUBA, was a spell binding, character driven novel filled with intrigue, would be adventurous and mysterious So I was pretty excited when the author announced that she was writing her book I was hooked from start til finish, and I read this book in two sittings I just couldn t put it down The ability of this author to tell a story is just magical, I was Beatriz while I was reading this book, and I was feeling everything she was I understood why she did certain things, and couldn t let it go She isn t your typical heroine, and I loved that she stayed true to herself until the end Love ebbs and flows, a low level hum in the background, but anger sinks its claws in you and refuses to let go Like with Next Year in Havana, the history and politics regarding Cuba was told perfectly It was so interesting and engaging, and it piqued my interest even I mostly read romance books, and even though the romance in this book is a bit in the background, it still plays an important role in my opinion The balance between the espionage and romance scenes was really good I can t believe I am saying this, but I wanted a bit espionage scenes I was totally hooked on them, and it is definitely a genre I need to read The main characters were amazing and thankfully not oldest Perez sister who struts her way through the pages, armed with the thirst for revenge as she somehow moseys her way into the clutches of the CIA while tangling with a senator whose a player in politics and in every sense of the word.Within the fodder material of the fabled and many attempts of the CIA to assassinate Fidel Castro is where Cleeton posits Beatriz Perez after her escape from Cuba, navigating the thorny issues of policy and politics of the time Bold, hot headed and reckless, Beatriz carves a path for herself that s as treacherous as you d expect, resulting in having her loyalties sorely tested as her decisions change the course of her life Cleeton writes in favour of long, descriptive passages of place and emotion the pace is slower as a result, the plot a little convoluted The romance isn t quite the focus here rather, Beatriz herself is the star of the show, front and centre Her long, longstanding affair with a powerful senator is carried out amidst society s expectations and the uncertain political climate, a subplot that runs alongside her involvement with the CIA I ll admit though, that it is harder to be singularly or emotionally invested in Beatriz completely as I was in Cleeton s first book about Elisa and her granddaughter Undoubtedly, Beatriz is a colourful character who stands out sharply sometimes too painfully sharply like a woman cut from a different cloth not just by means of her birth but also her life experiences, but ultimately, she s still a protagonist whose story I read about from a distance as she made her own small stamp on history, for better or worse.Cleeton s impactful writing carries it all here, despite the odd hollowness I felt about Beatriz by the end It s what took me through the politics, the lies, the dirty games and the passing of time within the pages after all and it s what keeps me coming back ARC by the publisher via Netgalley flag 5 likesLike see review Oct 09, 2018 Ari marked it as to read OMFG need not have read the previous book to enjoy this one When We Left Cuba follows another of the Perez sisters, Beatriz, after the revolution in Cuba and Fidel Castro s rise With the CIA, politics, double agents, romance, unrequited love, and family drama, there s a lot to enjoy and savor in this book I m only sorry that I have to wait another year before Cleeton publishes another book flag 2 revolution in Cuba not just because of her family s diminished lifestyle, or the death of her brother she loves her country deeply and does not feel that Fidel Castro and his revolutionaries have Cuba s best interests at heart. She is recruited into the CIA, recommended by her brother s friend Eduardo, and the story centers on their largely separate attempts to rid Cuba of Castro A secondary plot within the novel is Beatriz s ill advised affair with a highly ranking senator Beatriz attempts to balance her love for Cuba with her love of a man who works for a country that views Cuba as little than a pawn in the Cold War.There are a number of excellent scenes in this novel, but I was unable to connect to Beatriz as a character the writing felt somehow distant from her, even though it was a first person POV through her eyes I felt that her anger clouded her common sense leaping wildly from one plan to another without concern for her safety or if her handlers had really put any thought into the plan I understand overwhelming anger, but to sustain it for so long, at the expense of everything for Beatriz, made it less and less believable relatable When We Left Cuba remains an interesting story, as I ve rarely read anything about Cuba it was a learning experience, I just wish I could ve connected to the characters flag 1 likeLike see review Apr 16, 2018 Elise Hooper rated We Left Cuba is exquisitely written Chanel Cleeton effectively transports you to the 1960s in Florida She encapsulates the era perfectly the politics, the dynamic between men and women, and the importance of your reputation This book follows Beatriz Perez, a headstrong woman who is nothing short of a trailblazer She s the type of woman that believes women bring to the table than simply being a trophy wife She wants out of life In fact, she doesn t want a husband at all What Beatriz wants is revenge Her twin brother, Alejandro, was killed during the upheaval in Cuba Beatriz is sure that the one at fault for her brother s death is Fidel Castro The man who has taken over the country she has known all of her life After her brother s death and Fidel Castro s successful takeover of Cuba, Beatriz and her family fled to America While her mother tries to marry off her and her sisters, Beatriz is trying to convince the CIA to work with her She plans to kill Fidel Castro herself However, what Beatriz doesn t expect is to fall in love with an American man an American Senator, no less This could throw a wrench in all of her plans I enjoyed When We Left Cuba I have not read the first book, Next Year in Havana, but I have only heard great things about it I wasn t sure what to expect with this book All I knew was that everyone would be clamoring to get their hands on this book once it releases to see whether or not the author would weave another spellbinding tale I loved Beatriz She is 100% authentically herself She makes no apologies for who she is or what she wants nor does she let anyone deter her from her goals She s truly a modern woman An icon One of my favorite things about this story is watching Beatriz fall in love She struggles with the fact that loving someone means you care for their well being and their happiness It s much easier for her to only worry about herself and her plans Not to mention, she worries love will trap her in a life of domesticity She s very much against being an accessory to a man, but falling in love with a man who accepts her as she is is almost worse than being seen as an accessory In other words, she s scared She is terrified of being consumed by love If that isn t relatable to everyone, then I don t know what it is Overall, I cannot say enough great things about this story and look forward to reading the first book soon I love Beatriz and Nick I love the author s writing style Most of all, I love the ending This book reads like a movie Honestly, I hope it will become a movie The story is great, the characters are fully fleshed out and remarkable, and the setting is authentic flag Like see review previous 1 2 3 4 5 next new topicDiscuss This Book There are no discussion topics on this book yet Be the first to start When We Left Cuba is a solid follow up to Cleeton s last novel, Next Year in Havana This book focuses on Beatriz Perez and her desire for revenge against Fidel Castro and his cronies who forced her family to leave Cuba There is a greater focus on Beatriz s love life and politics in this novel and less on Cuba and its culture and history My favorite part of Next Year in Havana was absorbing details regarding the food and environs of Cuba and the history that led to Batiste s downfall However When [...]
