people with mental health issues that amplify their tendency to worry simply need to calm the fuck down this book is for those of us who wouldn t have a diagnosis but still worry way than we d like to.Worth quoting Worrying is wasteful It costs you time, energy, and or money and gives you nothing useful in return Why I chose it 2019 New Year New You Just kidding I m exactly the same today as I was yesterday But one of my goals for this year is to reduce my anxiety While traveling recently, I was distracted by the following worries whether the tiny bump on my cat s lip was something horrible or just an injury from wrestling with his brother whether our flight was going to be delayed to the point of missing our connection if our cat sitter was going to lock herself out of the house, leading our cats to die of hunger or thirst whether the car reservation at our destination was properly confirmed Looking over that list, you ll see that approximately 0% of that was within my control at that moment, yet it was causing my shoulders to rise closer and closer to my ears Then I saw this book and thought yeah, I probably should calm the fuck down Review I ve read Ms Knight s other books, and while they weren t always what I was looking for, I do like her style and tone This is definitely my favorite of hers that I ve read, and I think her approach is one that could really work for me I m going to share the basics below mostly for my own information , but she doesn t such a great job of illustrating her points the tarantula story is especially clever that you should definitely not take the below as a substitute for the real thing.Okay Let s go.The overarching theme is that we should try to get to a point where we can address our worries from a point of logic, not emotion Hard to do, obviously But here are the three big points Acknowledge what has happenedAccept what you cannot controlAddress what you can controlMs Knight suggests there are four main faces your worry might take anxiety, sadness, anger, or denial she s calls it ostriching I have definitely seen my worry turn to anxiety and anger with the occasional sadness thrown in I m not much for completely ignoring problems, but I can see how that might be appealing This part is helpful if you re not aware of how you tend to act in moments, but it s not the most necessary part of the book. That comes next, with her repetition around the one question to rule them all Can I Control It And can I control it within reason Like, I can control never being the passenger in a plane crash by never flying, but that s not an option for me So, once I m in the plane, can I control whether the plane gets there Nope This point is so key, and possibly so obvious to people who don t find themselves staring at the ceiling at 3 AM because of something they said at work two weeks ago that literally no one cared about or noticed But for the rest of us, it helps to be reminded. The second part of the book really focuses on treating worries logically She asks us to take a worry and put it on a scale Highly UnlikelyPossible But Not LikelyLikelyHighly LikelyInevitableAnd then, determine the timing is it outlying, imminent, or already happening And then, can I control it From there, she offers some tips on how to let go of the things that we can t control One option is PHEW productive, helpful, and effective worrying , which is essentially taking action about certain things you can control For example, with my cat s lip, once I thought about how we could, if necessary, have a vet come to the home while the cat sitter is there and we re on vacation, I stopped being so concerned he s fine, by the way.I have generally been fairly good at coming up with solutions to my anxieties, but letting go of the ones I can t control has been challenging I think a big part has been treating every worry as equally likely and imminent, which is just absurd And this book has helped me recognize that. That said, I can always use some good tips for managing the shitstorms her word in my life, and part three of the book offers some Her principles of dealing with shit include taking stock, identifying my realistic ideal outcome, and then triaging what needs to be done first, second, etc She illustrates this section with loads of examples, which I enjoyed a lot.The final part is a choose your own adventure bit, meant to solidify all the concepts, but I didn t find it to be as helpful But others might enjoy it Keep it Donate it Toss it Keep it Definitely flag 1 not only does it combine dealing with anxiety and stress, something that we all can relate to, but it also sounds hilarious, which, according to me, is also what you need when reading a book about anxiety and how to deal with it.Firstly, I was a little weary about reading and reviewing a self help book But honesty time here, I have suffered from my fair share of stress and anxiety, last year alone, I had eight weeks off of work because of it So I think I am one of those people who, this book fell into their lap for a reason So off I go This book starts off by asking you three questions, three questions that you have to be honest about before you can continue, and like me, I am sure so many people answered Yes to all of them It is hard hitting this book, it makes you realise that you aren t alone That just because you are going though your own patch of anxious misery, there are people who are going through a similar thing, with some of the same thoughts as you It is both confronting and comforting.Everything Is A Tarantula this chapter speaks to me on a deep, deeeeep level Not only because I am particularly adverse to spiders But Knight has so perfectly summed up the feeling of how anxiety builds When you first see the spider you go into good ole, flight or fright, then the heart rate speeds up, sweat sets in and finally the inner monologue begins I love this comparison, and when, in my life, my tarantulas pop up, I ll know how to deal with them better.I am loving this book, I didn t expect to, but I am, it is giving me so many coping mechanisms than I expected and it is keeping it light hearted The last thing I want, as a stress headed anxiety sufferer, is a heavy, scientific word loaded, text book So this book is perfect I can t say it enough, It is such a good read I also love that this book has an index, got a particular problem Look it up and read about it Address your problem and deal with it This book covers everything, from going over embarrassing conversations in your head until you have blown them up, out of proportion to acting out what you are going to say to people, while you are in the shower knowing full well, you would never be as brave as you are in your personal pantomime.I also love the Choose Your Own Adventure section in the back of the book It gives you senarios and you choose which emotion you feel and it tells you which chapters to read, to overcome that anxiety, sadness, stress, anger or whatever other feeling you may be experiencing I think this is a great way to assess just what emotion you are feeling, as sometimes, this is the hardest part, identifying how exactly you are feeling and why. This book is a fantastic read, read it in its entirety, or read chapters as you need them, it is perfectly designed for both choices It is easy to read, easy to understand and it is fun It doesn t make you feel like an idiot for reading a self help book, it makes you feel light hearted and gives you so many ideas and things to try, when you are having a hard day I think that this is a book that everyone should have on their bookshelf, even if you only pick it up a handful of times throughout your year, that is enough I guarantee it will help you each time you pick it up and flip through is sweary and helpful pages flag Like see review Dec 17, 2018 Megan Dickson rated it it was ok This of previously This book sort of just regurgitates it What Knight does do particular well is takes a topic that should be discussed and does it in a way that is engaging and not overly serious, which I am sure would be the first helpful step for some people suffering with mild anxiety with every day life such as finding a spider in the house que eye roll Most of the topics or examples did not relate to me, in the sense that it was straight forward and things that are described would not bother me It called life shit happens and you have to deal with it in the best way you can That is all there is to it That being said, this book was not total trash at all It encourages you to equip your mind and think rationally under stressful situations which is extremely important mind tools to gain and develop The last chapter was completely pointless and I skipped it altogether I did however feel calmer and less bothered by the little things bothering worrying me after reading this Because, f it right Life is too short to spend your time, energy and or money on things you can t change or control And if you are able to change something work out what to do based on the ideally outcome for you and rationally options. There are some things you can t control in life and as you can t change the things out of your control, there is no point worrying about them This is the underlying message in the book and something I learnt a long time ago The only thing you can ever control is yourself and your actions and knowing this certainly takes a huge amount of pressure and stress off your shoulders So stop worrying about someone else because all you can control is yourself, your thoughts and your actions.Main lessons You should only spend time, energy and money on things you care about from activities and appointments to friends and family.Worrying is wasteful It costs you time, energy and money and gives you nothing useful in return.Take some f ing responsibility for your life Stop blaming the world for your misfortune because if you do that you will be blinded, constantly miserable and never make the most of your life It is what you make it, and you are put on this planet to thrive not survive How likely is what you are worrying about to actually happen Is this a priority for me right now Should I be wasting my time, energy and or money on this right now I would to see and crappy situations escalate and become chaotic It s a fun read and Knight demonstrates some great tips and plans which will help you to take a breath and not only manage any disastrous situation without looking like an utter lunatic but also how to manage feelings of anxiety which often brew and take over in stressful or unexpected situations.I particularly resonated with Knight s tarantula analogy As someone who suffers from severe arachnophobia, this may sound odd but stay with me for a minute Knight describes those 4am worrisome times when you are lying wide awake in bed while your worries and anxieties hide in dark corners like a big hairy tarantula.Yep, I said TarantulaIt s unlikely that there really is a big tarantula in your room, but what if there is How will you get rid of it Is your house insurance up to date to be able to burn the house down Does it have babies How many babies Are they under my bed unseen That s what your 4am worries are Unseen, unlikely and there s not a whole lot you can do about them at 4am in the dark This is where Knight comes to the rescue with a plan to get you some sleep and deal with issues as and when they arrive. The back of the book is a quirky touch Real life not so nice examples of situations with choose your own adventure choices Pretty funny to read and honestly select what I would really do, which ended up most of the time being the wrong, anxiety driven adventure But, it demonstrated the tendencies I have and the ways in which outcomes can be so much better for me and less draining on my time and sleep patterns if I just took the time to Calm The F k Down.Who Should Read Calm The F k Down I thoroughly recommend Calm The F k Down to anyone who s looking for a tranquil and positive 2019 maybe a few world leaders could benefit from a copy Most of us need a little reminder now and again to keep calm and address situations as, when and if they arrive flag Like see review Jan 02, 2019 Steph rated it it was get anxious about stuff that hasn t happened rather than stuff that has, has actually proven somewhat useful Perhaps not so much with capital A Anxiety, but definitely lowercase a anxiety general stress frustration. My absolute favourite thing about this book is that it didn t tell me to take up meditation, exercise , practice deep breathing, or any of those other things that come up within five seconds of googling anxiety or talking to a therapist Been there, done that, still anxious So it was incredibly refreshing to read a book that didn t try to tell me what I already know, but instead shared what has worked for a fellow anxiety sufferer who s been pretty damn successful despite her own struggles It definitely won t cure your anxiety, but it doesn t pretend to Knight full advocates seeking professional help and if needed, pharmaceutical treatment But it will give you some surprisingly simple and effective tools for at least slightly calming the f ck down, and will give you plenty of laughs with ridiculous metaphors and stories about Star Trek conventions flag Like see review Jan 16, 2019 Jade Wright rated it liked it review of another edition I ve always been a fan it MUCH easier to stomach than something like Rachel Hollis s GIRL WASH YOUR FACE I m definitely interested in reading from this author as unlike other self help books I ve read over the past few years, I actually found a connection with this one not just because of the blasphemous title either Was it groundbreaking No But I enjoyed it and found it insightful throughout Honestly, I m not sure I m ever going to find a self help book that matches up to Eckhart Tolle and M Scott Peck s books I read their novels MANY years ago and they have stuck with me through thick and thin I feel Sarah Knight s book was close to having a big impact on my life but it also felt slightly rushed This is her 4th book in the series which you don t need to read chronologically I guess a part of me felt like perhaps this was a quick book churned out for sales While the basis of it is good, I think it could have been better and even powerful flag Like see review Jan 12, 2019 Shannon Rochester rated it 4. Self help books start at a severe deficit in that they aren t very helpful Yet the fact that we think there s a book out there that can cure our generalized anxiety, or help us shed those last 10 lbs for good, or make us rich, keeps the genre going never mind that if books could save us from ourselves, this country wouldn t be the fat, nervous, broke mess that it is But if you have to read a self help book, you could do far less than the latest in Sarah Knight s f ck series. The author has a Self [...]
