The book opens with a chilling 911 call in the small town of Meadowlark, Kansas An investigator arrives a house in an upscale neighborhood to discover a lot of blood Who the blood belonged to becomes one of the main threads of the story The reader doesn t find out until the end what exactly happened in this seemingly beautiful house.Switch to 10 weeks before the murder and we are introduced to Maddie, the main narrator of Beautiful Bad It is her story to tell and her icy cold voice works to draw the reader in In the present, Maddie is in writing therapy she recently suffered a head injury and cannot remember how she was hurt Her husband, Ian, told her she slipped and fell, but the police believe domestic violence is involved In therapy, she focuses on her fears, especially on anything that could potentially harm her young son, Charlie She needs to go back to the time before she was paralyzed by anxiety to understand her current state of mind.Switch again to the early 2000 s Maddie recounts her years abroad and her adventures with her best friend Joanna and her romance with a British Soldier named Ian The narrative follows Maddie s relationship with Joanna and Ian over the course of many years, eventually leading up to the events that result in a murder.Told from multiple POV s and covering many timelines, Beautiful Bad suffers from trying to do too much I would have enjoyed this if told only from Maddie s POV I found both Diane s and Ian s POV s to be pointless I enjoyed the chapters told from Maddie s perspective I had her figured out early on, but there was something about her voice that lured me and kept me interested in the events of the story. The pacing is slow, and at times, nothing of significance happens I also found the outcome predictable However, I was thrown by the final twist, as I hadn t realized just how crazy the murderer was While Beautiful Bad has its flaws, Maddie s character makes for an interesting read Thank you to Kim and also, in the way she can spin a tale Jo and Maddie are thick as thieves, as close as two people can be without being related This fact makes it unbearably cruel when a man comes between them, destroying their friendship Maddie cannot believe that Ian is into her Being Jo s best friend, she is no stranger to playing second fiddle Jo has the looks and the charisma Even so, to Maddie s delight, Ian wants her and this creates a massive chasm between them filled with jealously and hate In addition, Jo knows there is something off about Ian and tries to warn Maddie again and again, but to no avail Because after all Maddie wasn t just in love, she was conquered. This wasn t just a psychological thriller, but also a meditation on friendship I especially enjoyed the closeness that Maddie and Jo shared Although it was a little predictable that a guy had come between them, it didn t bother me That happens all the time, although, it shouldn t This book also had some darker themes, involving abuse This novel was well written and was not only plot driven, but character driven, as well Those are my favorite forms of suspense I think it s all about balance, the Goldilocks formula, if you will There shouldn t be too much or too little of one thing, and Annie Ward nailed it Thank you to Park Row books for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review flag story begins in Bulgaria, or does it begin in Kansas or maybe Macedonia Is it when Maddie meets Joanna, or Joanna meets Ian, or when Maddie meets Ian Or does the story really start with an incident on a Missouri lake, back in the States, before any of them meet They are friends, but not really friends as a group They might hang out together at parties in Skopje, but really Joanna is friends with Ian, and Maddie becomes friends with Ian, but when they are together, somehow Ian has to choose They are all adrenaline junkies Maddie routinely crosses a very unstable border from her home in Bulgaria to go to Macedonia to see Joanna Joanna is involved with some very shady deals, trying to secure supplies for refugees She knows people, people who people like her should not know Ian is a Brit on security details, but even after his time is up for Her Majesty s service, he continues to take dangerous security assignments in the hottest spots of upheaval in the world Ian is tall He is strong He is handsome He is exciting For a girl like Maddie, a guy like that makes her go weak in the knees Needless to say, relationships like these tend to fall apart under the very weight of the personalities attached to them Each wants to be the center of the friendship, and eventually, someone has to spin off into an orbit all their own Let s check in and see what Maddie has to say about what happened Jo this hurts I hope you still don t think I chose him over you I didn t I swear to God that s not what it was It was just a mistake is all I made a mistake and I m sorry I d love to see you again Uhhh, you kinda did As we get older, we start to realize that real friendships are truly rare gems, but to shine as brightly as they should, they do need to be paid attention to and frequently polished back to a high sheen Annie Ward reveals this story in a mosaic of chapters We go from 2001 to 2017 and all points in between The chapters have been put into a blender, so 2017 might be before 2001, or 2010 might be before 2003 We begin in Meadowlark, Kansas, with a pool of blood on the floor, in 2017 By giving us a peek at a fragment of the ending, Ward enlists us as detectives With rather diabolical subterfuge, we are fed clues in a haphazard fashion I would be doomed if I were brought before a tribunal and asked when I knew what when Each clue provides a puzzle piece that we have to snap down into place with, hopefully, a discernible picture visible by the end A word of caution though be on guard for the potential of an unreliable narrator We are all masters at fooling ourselves After all, to be successful at disseminating misinformation, one must convince oneself of a lie before one can convince others that a lie is the truth Most of the time we don t even realize we are lying.Statements like this one are interesting I adored him, as damaged as he was I found him all the fascinating for the chunks that have been torn out of him I told myself that even if I could never change him, I would never abandon him Or how about this one You ve been a huge surprise, you know that Here s this extraordinary flower growing up through the crack in my concrete nightmare What am I supposed to do In an agonizing gesture, he touched the center of my bottom lip while looking in my eyes Like a petal, he said softly Blowing through all this You ll be gone before I know it Those are eternal love type statements that a person can always remember fondly when times get tough Will things said or thought at one point in time be enough to avoid a tragedy at a future point in time Ian is, frankly, shattered by the events he has seen They are the types of things that cling to a person with ghostly hands, even long after he arrives back in Kansas from some godforsaken part of the world Maddie isn t the same person now either, or maybe the real Maddie is finally emerging from the swaddlings of education, experience, and beauty, that she wrapped around herself, and now she is like an Egyptian mummy rising from the dead by the elixir of love She has a son now, and he is the sun and moon of her existence Let s not forget about Joanna She may be the least changed of the three, but maybe that is because she was the most genuine to begin with, or maybe she was always the most crazy.Maybe all three are crazy Intrigued Well, you should be You must accept, before you read this book, that you will be wrong in several of your suppositions It won t help that I ve swirled my hand through the puddle of information and left you with a cloudy pool just wish it was just too many pages of facts at one time.Thinking about Ian and Maddie and how they became attracted to each other at the beginning was written really well. The chapter headings were brilliant as the lead up to THE DAY OF THE KILLING chapters came to the forefront. That gripped me.This author can really spin a tale when she s writing the action scenes. This is a book written in reverse and written well It worked. So to sum upI think the books pages could have been shorter and skimmed down and still have impact on a reader. The narration although needed was just too many pages of information that I tended to wander off in my head.ButThe actual psychological story was good, the ending brilliant.Publishers, please please stop comparing books to others Let it stand in its own they are now married and raising their young son, Charlie While Ian is away in Iraq doing security work, Maddie begins attending therapy sessions in which she slowly reveals the sources of her anxiety Obviously you have to read the book if you want to find out how everything is connected.I honestly think the length of this book could have been trimmed by about 50 pages as it felt very slow moving at times But despite that, I really was caught up in the story and seeing how everything pieced together I loved how some of the story took place in the Balkans as the social climate there added to the tension plus it s it s not a setting I typically get to read about in fiction This book is already being compared to other recent best selling psychological thrillers which I don t really agree with I feel like when a book is promoted like that you just automatically expect all of these dramatic twists and turns and end up feeling disappointed if you are able to predict things before they put it down until I was finished And now Oh Lort do I want to vomit all the words and tell everyone everything about this But I shall refrain and only give you these tidbits instead 1 It takes place in a fictional southern suburb of Kansas City called Meadowlark which is the Kansas state bird so clever girl Annie Ward.2 There are three timelines The first takes place in the now 2010 where police are responding to a 911 screaming hang up call and have found blood all over the inside of a house The second is around 9 11 where the two meet he s a soldier in Macedonia she s a journalist in Bulgaria The third starts several weeks before the 911 call and works its way forward.3 There are MANY possibilities when it comes to the potential superbadawful It could be her, it could be him, it could be her friend, it could be his ex, it could even be the neighbor The best thing of all, though By the time the narrative had circled back to the present I was so invested in the story of them meeting and the various things that were making me go hmmmmm surrounding their relationship that I had totally forgotten why there was a cop at the door For real, it was like That s probably all I can safely say about the story before getting a cease and desist letter I will say that this tops the charts for me when it comes to a domestic suspense thriller so it s getting every star.To prove I m still a nitpicky asshole, here are my minor quibbles 1 I m not super keen on the title because it is so generic and this cover is ugly It appears there is another cover option so I hope they go with that 2 This takes place where I and apparently the author live All of the locations and descriptions excluding the town itself are spot on aside from one reference to a horrible incident at a water park which is said to have happened near the airport Ummmm, the water park and the airport aren t even in the same state so I m not quite sure why creative license was chosen regarding that and nothing else. But for real Nitpicky, right This thing was perfect ARC received from Park Row in exchange for an honest review Thank you so much I would have never even known what I was potentially difficult to manage When police are called to their house, they need to make a decision what has happened, and who s at fault I tried really hard to not provide you any spoilers, but it s next to impossible not to when writing a sneak peek of Beautiful Bad Out of the three point of views, the present day parts were most enjoyable While you begin your adventure with Maddie and Ian, Beautiful Bad is intoxicating and enchanting but as you arrive to the halfway point, we are given so much background and useless fodder from their past that you end up not really giving a damn to who s at fault and why Please, just get to the point Once we get back to the present day, Beautiful Bad is predictable and just another regurgitation of every domestic thriller that s been released in the last three years If you haven t read than 2 domestic thrillers in your lifetime, then you may enjoy this title I do think that the chemistry and toxicity between Maddie and Ian can be a good plot arc that many eventually do I can t say that this is one of those stories that you will be able to figure out by the clues, but if you pay close enough attention you can come up with what s happened on your own The thing is it s hard to trust this story The POV s are all different, and don t always align the same way You ll notice inconsistencies and you won t be so sure why they are there.None the less after I with my one nitpick I know thrillers need to be compared to a popular book, but it s not necessary here Beautiful Bad stands on its own The plot is pretty straightforward We open with a 911 call and then move back and forth in time, one piece of the mystery unfolding at a time.Well, sort of.We have Maddie former world traveler who chased adventure and certainly courted danger, who is now living back in her home state of Kansas, where she s raising her son Charlie while battling the aftermath of a severe injury sustained while she was withIan Maddie s husband, former British soldier turned protection agent when Maddie first meets him Suffering from severe PTSD sustained from that but also from his work serving as a defense contractor ground support liasom in war torn countries He and Maddie meet while she s visiting her friend Joanna, humanitarian aid worker willing to do whatever it takes to get aid to the refugees she works with Brilliant, beautiful, living as hard as she can, and all sharp edges She s less than pleased when Maddie and Ian hit it off, leading to an estrangement that breaks Maddie s heart.Maddie, in Kansas, is trying to deal with the changes physical, yes, but frightening to her are the emotional ones she s felt since her accident with the help of her new therapist, the delightfully written Cami J, whose help Maddie resists as it means she has to deal with Ian, who was dark and brooding when she met him, a looming disaster of a man whose ongoing battles with PTSD and alcoholism have made Maddie s life a minefield. She s scared, you see Scared of what she sees on the news, worried about Charlie Worried about Ian His drinking His temper Her injury, which she really can t recall getting and she doesn t like being pushed by Cami J, she understands Ian, she does Except that maybeMaybe she s afraid of what really understanding him would mean and not just for her Maybe she needs to be terrified for Charlie. After a lot of thinking about what Cami J has gotten her to reveal, she reconnects with Joanna Arranges for her to come visit, but while Ian, who is still traveling all over for his job, is still away She and Joanna can reconnect, repair the friendship that was so important to Maddie back before her life was Ian and then Kansas with Ian and Charlie. And that s all there is Sort of.That s the beauty of Beautiful Bad There is everything that s there and then there s everything underneath.I don t want to reveal any spoilers, but let s just say truth can be a lot than it seems and that what Maddie says she wants isn t what she actually wants And when Maddie wants something or someone she gets it No matter what the cost might be.I really enjoyed Beautiful Bad, and think anyone who enjoys twisty and twisted thrillers, especially those where you know what the endgame will be and get to watch almost as trapped as those in the web of the truth and lies are, will love this It s fast, it s furious on many levels and hooks you fast and keeps you locked in Quick aside Joanna I actually felt the worst for her I think she always thought she was miles ahead of everyone else and well No Overall it s predictable but in a oh no, is that And that Dammmmmmn way, which is to say that there s a lot a lot of twisted fun waiting for those who enjoy dark psychological thrillers I know I sure enjoyed the ride flag 9 something to do with that Maddie and Ian share a son named Charlie The book immediately starts off with a bang as police officers are dispatched to a home where a 911 call has been made You know right away that there has been a killing as the chapter is titled Day of the Killing Upon arriving at the scene, the officer finds a large amount of blood and evidence that foul play has occurred It is also clear that a child is in the house. The book alternates between the past when Maddie meets Ian in Macedonia and her relationship with her best friend Jo Maddie is in the Balkans as a part of her career as a writer, Jo is aiding humanitarian efforts in refugee camps, and Ian is a British bodyguard hired to protect in Macedonia The story then moves through the entire time she has known Ian, with chapters in between that cover the 12 weeks leading up to the day of killing and Maddie s time in therapy Unfortunately, the use of the flashbacks to Maddie and how she met Ian are too frequent and bog the story down Only a few of the things that occur during the flashbacks are relevant to the ending of the story and the remaining ones feel unnecessary Through the flashbacks, I found Maddie, Jo, and especially Ian to be unlikable characters The book also sometimes switches to the perspectives of Jo and Ian which I didn t really feel did anything for the story.I am happy I did keep reading though because the last quarter of the book was suspenseful and well done It follows Maddie and Ian after they move back to Maddie s home in America and their life leading up to the day of killing 1. Beautiful Bad is a psychological thriller about a mysterious accident, a murder, and a marriage at its breaking point While there are some interesting elements and one fascinating unreliable narrator, as a whole I struggled with the multiple POV s and timelines. The book opens with a chilling 911 call in the small town of Meadowlark, Kansas An investigator arrives a house in an upscale neighborhood to discover a lot of blood Who the blood belonged to becomes one of the main threads of the [...]

    2. Put on those detective hats and prepare for a heart pounding thriller, sure to shock even the most masterful of sleuths I was not at all prepared for the epic twist in this book I think I ve become numb to the formulaic twists and turns I m accustomed to reading This book, however, was NOT that Annie Ward is supremely fresh in the way she writes, but also, in the way she can spin a tale Jo and Maddie are thick as thieves, as close as two people can be without being related This fact makes i Put [...]

    6. This is the type of book you want your friends to read because you just know everyone s opinions are going to be all over the place and you can t wait to hear what they think The things I enjoyed about the book could easily be someone else s least favorite parts Some heavy subjects are tackled and certainly the chapters towards the end would provide material for a lively book club discussion Near the beginning of the story you know a 911 call has been placed and a police officer arrives at a Thi [...]
