was a large, interesting but quiet man and Harper was persistent, getting under his skin What develops between these two is slow burning and beautiful Although there was heat, the focus was very much on the emotionality of the connection and this intensity was fantastic. There was a cast of strong secondary characters including another military family who were in crisis, Harper s son and her mother The stories around these characters were strong and interwoven inexplicably into Harper and Bennett s tale This all made for a rich and deep story. This is my first time reading Laura Trentham but I read a romance in which the widow starts a new relationship, but then the author slowly destroys the character of the man she was married to That is a huge pet peeve of mine so I was so very glad that Trentham allowed Noah to remain a good guy, the guy that Harper fell in love with And, it s because of this that when I was presented with Noah s death scene and Ben s birth that my tears were falling I almost thought it might be a mistake to have Noah be such a huge part of this novel, but it wasn t I think it made the reader miss him as much as Harper and Bennett missed him.All of the characters decision to start a new business leads her to getting in touch with another of her husband s former teammates, Bennett Caldwell, who left the SEALs to run his own outdoor survival training business. How do you know when it s time to move on Harper is a very relatable heroine, down to earth, normal, sassy She struggles with her growing attraction to Bennett To me her slightly contradictory reactions felt very real, the sort of illogical thought processes we go through in real life For his part, Bennett struggles with his guilt at falling for his best friend s wife and the death of a man who was like a brother There s cute kids, huge dogs, lots of coffee, wilderness training, marriage troubles, sorrow, love, heartache, princess stories and hawt kisses. The novel is told from Bennett and Harper s points of view and with flashbacks to pivotal moments in both Harper and Bennett s interactions with Noah I have to say I wasn t a fan of the flashbacks, it is kind of disconcerting when you are starting to get invested in a new romance to be interrupted with flashbacks to the start of the romance between Harper and Noah.Overall, I thought the burb didn t really book, even though the pace was a bit slow sometimes I thought it had a great message and it dealt with important issues A military widow is living a blah existence, just working at a blah job, living her life for her little boy She lives with her mother, who seems to be having a exciting and fulfilling life than she is She goes to visit her friend Allison, another military wife, who was her support when she lost her husband, and finds that other military wives are also living unfulfilled lives, just like hers Discussing options for a business that could improve the lot of military wives, she realizes that she received a huge amount of money from Bennett Grant and learns from Allison that there is no such award as he stated. When she goes to confront the guy, she finds the one man who can jump start her life, make her existence the fun and exciting life that she should be enjoying Problem was, there are guilt feelings, loyalty to a wonderful husband who died serving his country, the needs of a little boy who never met his dad and needs a father figure, and just plain distance He lives hours away from her town, and she needs to establish her business near the base in order for it to work The book touches on two issues that I thought were important One is the emotional state that soldiers are left in when they return from battle Wives try to help their husbands but these soldiers are proud, trained to withhold information and feelings, and just plain stubborn It s not an easy job, on top of keeping their children emotionally stable facing a father who is losing it The other issue that was new to me and no less important is the limbo that professional women get into when they marry military men As a necessity, they have to relocate where their husbands are assigned Then sometimes they won t find a job that caters to their qualifications Oftentimes, they re not given the job they want because the employer don t want to waste time and resources on an employee that may relocate soon There is a lot of discontent because the wives can t fulfill their career ambitions, and many times are relegated to housewives because they are overqualified for the jobs available. In this story, we see Harper setting up a business with other three wives, and plans to broaden the scope to other bases so other wives will have an outlet for their talent She also helps her friend Allison face her marriage problems due to a troubled husband And all the while, falling in love with this taciturn, quiet man with a poker face that seldom smiles but makes her skin tingle every time she touches him I loved that he found love, after years of having no one Harper brought him to laughter and happiness and Bennett brought Harper to the lively and decisive woman she used to be It was an entertaining and informative story, with important issues and a lovely love story flag 2 likesLike see review Jan 27, 2019 Terri rated it it was amazing Shelves arc, netgalley Fantastic use her double degrees in Business and Marketing and worried every time he was deployed, they had a good marriage He was killed in the line of duty when she was pregnant with their son.Now Ben is five She has been sort of skating the surface of her life, working small accounting jobs, and living with her mother who s recently retired as a librarian and begun a second life as an eccentric Her current craze is nude painting After receiving some troubling emails from her friend Allison, Harper decides to go visit her She finds a woman just holding on by the skin of her teeth and dealing with a husband who has PTSD Allison was the first to welcome Harper when she married Noah and has always been a tower of strength Now she needs Harper to be the strong one Allison introduces Harper to a number of Navy wives who are are dealing with the sorts of issues Harper had when her husband was alive.Harper wants to come up with some sort of business that can give those women something real to do She offers to use the money that she received after Noah s death as some sort of bravery award Allison knows that such an award and cash payment doesn t exist which leads Harper to Bennett Caldwell who served with Noah and was his best friend. The viewpoint in this book changes from Harper to Bennett and from the past to the present It tells the story of a man who had no one until he became friends with Noah He was a neglected foster child until taken in at age sixteen by a former military man named Sarge who adopted him Unfortunately he died shortly after Bennett joined the Navy Now Bennett is out of the service and has started a company teaching survival training He fell in love with Harper from the parts of the emails and letters Noah shared but kept away from her because he felt guilty about it But Noah made him promise to take care of Harper and the baby before he died He feels guilty that Noah died saving his life when Bennett was supposed to give his life for Noah s.This was an excellent romance but not a light, fluffy one PTSD, Service wives fear for their husbands and tensions in marriages, grief and guilt are all part of this story But so is finding a new love and making new starts flag 1 likeLike see review Oct 30, 2018 D rated it it was amazing I was given this book in exchange for an honest review I was skeptical when I first heard about this book I have read a few stories about military life, where the characters especially the service members were way over the top with cockiness and attitude, that it just made the story annoying But this story totally threw me for a loop I loved this story I am typically not a fan of sad stories but there was just enough ups and downs in this book that I could not put it down I felt actual pity and happiness while reading this book and I must admit that I did even cry a couple of times during those nights that I was sitting up by myself just trying to get in some chapters before bed I loved the fact that Harper was a smart, book worm type of girl I liked that Noah was pushing for the SEALs but still had a tender heart and wasn t afraid to show it All of the children that were involved that also had to go through the struggles and lastly BennettI fell in love with his character Mister survivor man He had such a hard life, no family and no friends, it was so satisfying to see that someone could see he deserved happiness too Being a military wife is a real struggle Trying to balance life Raising kids, missing your spouse but trying to keep going when you just want to sit and live in self pity Luckily, my husband only had to go away a couple of times and we lived overseas away from family for 3 yrs I knew and met many men and women whose spouses were away for months at a time some were away almost 10 months out of the year Some had even passed away during combat I once took classes with an older lady going to school for nursing She was raising 2 teenage girls, one of them had cystic fibrosis and her husband was a marine who had died in a helicopter crash She would come to class looking so tired when she had to stay up doing breathing therapy with her daughter who was up having a hard time breathing that night yet she came to class I could see her in this story as well, with the struggle, perseverance and success in living everyday life I did also know someone who was a Navy SEAL and died during a deployment He worked so hard to become a SEAL, although I know his family would rather have him with them, I know that he died doing what he loved and for the benefit and love for our country Thank you for letting me reminisce This story brought all of the memories out I am so glad that I received this book to review, otherwise, I may have not read it or been too hesitant to read it and I would have really missed out flag 1 likeLike see review Feb 01, 2019 Linda Zagon rated it really liked it Linda s Book Obsession Reviews The Military Wife by Laura Trentham, Absorbing, moving, and incredibly uplifting The Military Wife is a tender, heartfelt story that delves not only into the emotional and psychological struggles and hardships of being part of the military and the effects they have on both the enlisted themselves and their loved ones, but also the patience, understanding, support, and trust required to maintain a relationship and individuality under those conditions. The prose is effortless and well turned The characters are scarred, genuine, and e [...]

    2. THE MILITARY WIFE swept me up quickly into Harper s life and story Harper was a military widow and what was unusual about her tale was that she was five years down the line from being widowed She was forever changed by her experiences, sad at times but she was also functional and optimistic about life ahead. This story is told in a past present chapter approach Whilst I really did want to be focused in the present and what was happening there, I did appreciate the need to know the story underp TH [...]
