    1. 4+A welcome brand new voice in a modern fantasy arena! A well crafted coming of age story set in the unusual setting inspired by the South East Asian culture. The story follows two parallel storylines or two main protagonists and allows to appreciate the worldbuilding from multiple points of view. Somewhat reminiscent of Anthony Ryan's 'Blood Song' and Brian Staveley's 'Emperor's Blades' I was particularly pleasantly surprised by Richard Nell's storytelling ability and clarity of his writing. I [...]

    2. I thought I'd make myself useful and mention a few things:1. This book is always on Kindle Unlimited.2. 3. Where to begin? There isn't much "paradise" here. It's dark and brutal and there aren't many good people in this world. But, those that are really shine. Like the last book I read, Snakewood, there are multiple PoVs and timeline shifts. But, unlike that book, this one never gets confusing and I had no issue connecting to the characters. The setting for the story is highly unusual for fantasy books, but the author did an amazing job fleshing it out. Highly recommended. Mr. Nell deserves way more r [...]

    4. I recently learned that Richard Nell will be submitting Kings of Paradise, the first book in the Ash and Sand trilogy, into next year’s SPFBO (Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off) competition. In my mind, there’s no question of whether it will be a finalist or not. In fact, I will be shocked if it doesn’t outright win the whole contest. This book is that good.Clocking in at over 200,000 words, Kings of Paradise is a methodically paced and richly detailed story that primarily focuses on two teen [...]

    5. I can't remember the last time I changed a rating, but I do feel it is needed. Every time I see a review of this book I am reminded of how compelling and memorable this story was, and of how much I enjoyed it. I can still remember specific moments and scenes in my head, and I think that is significant. I don't think I can fairly say that this was anything less than a well-deserved 5 star book. 4.5+ stars, for most of the book it was a 5 star read. This is a dark book, with brutal violence and can [...]

    6. I have no idea what made me pick this up but I am so glad I did. This book was fucking amazing. It kept engaged from the very beginning. I was a little sad every time I had to out it down to do things like go to work and sleep. The world that Mr. Nell has created is pretty incredible. But the thing that really made me love this story was the characters he filled that world with. While I enjoy books with multiple points of view, usually I have a character or seven depending on the author that I c [...]

    7. Using stars, if books can ever be fairly classified in such a blunt way, this book requires five. The first thing to note is that there isn’t much paradise here, even in the relatively mild climatic conditions of the south. Secondly, there are kings, legions of princes and princesses, and every kind of human ogre, and all have very tough lives, many characters hardly rising above the shitpits of crude existence. Generally, this is a story about the brutish nature of humanity, seen in the evil w [...]

    8. Plot:This book has a rather complicated plot, with each of the characters sort of doing their own thing at the beginning.Ruka is the first character you meet, and you see him as an adult who’s murdered a young child and he’s frying up his limbs on a skillet. After that, you flash back to when he was a kid and watch him grow up into the person he became. Ruka is “Noss Born”, which means he’s been touched by the Mountain God aka The God of Death, Chaos, and Suffering. He starts off as a [...]

    9. First, I’m going to give my spoiler free recommendation: if you are a fan of fantasy or just good stories, buy it now.If it helps, I am a fan of Anthony Ryan (Blood Song, especially), Joe Abercrombie, Mark Lawrence, etc. If any authors of that ilk resonate with you, I’m sure there is something here that you will enjoy. You will see genre favorite tropes play out and just as often subverted. There is violence, love, brother and sisterhood, emotionally charged scenes and drama in abundance. Ob [...]

    10. Takes you on an epic journey with multiple characters and through many lands. Loved the character development and am eager to find out what happens to them in the second instalment! A little bit of magic, a little bit of love story, a little bit of discomfort with some creative characters. This book has it all!

    11. Great read for both experienced fantasy readers and beginners alike.Has a gritty real world feel while still fully immersed in a fantasy setting. The author has done an admirable job in creating both a world and characters with a lot of depth that pull you in and don't let go until the last page is finished. Highly recommend and I am looking forward to the second book in the series to come out.

    12. This is a really good book and you should read it.By the end, I was eager for the sequel. The characters are engaging and intense, and the setting an intriguing low-magic world packed with interesting cultures to be further delved.Richard Nell manages two stories in one -- a talented young man struggling and succumbing to evil in a brutal world he only wants to escape, brilliantly contrasted with his opposite, the tale of a shiftless prince finally forced to overcome his indolence and making him [...]

    13. This dark, gripping epic fantasy sets two exceptional young men on a world-changing collision course. From the start, it’s obvious this is going to be a dark fantasy, and also rather a good one. Two separate narratives follow the stories of Ruka, a twisted genius who has to fight for life in his harsh country, and Kale, a prince who doesn’t get on with his father. These are great characters in an interesting world, doing interesting things. It’s epic enough to earn its length. No long-winde [...]

    14. I really had a hard time figuring out how to rate this book. It’s very well written, has 3 well written POV characters, and a very coherent story line that is completely separate to begin with that slowly comes together in a very natural way. So 5 Stars for how well written it is. The book does a great job of delving into the morality of a deeply unjust world. Now where the issue comes in for me is that the book is incredibly grim and dark. I generally like grimdark fantasy but this one could [...]

    15. Copy Paste from my review.Mind. Blown.Saw a few reviews from people, I wasn't sure what to expect. But I did not expect to sit here for hours reading and not eating or drinking until I finished this book. Epic is the only word I can think of. Not too many character POVs that might confuse some people which is always nice, but holy crap I'm sitting here just thinking about this book. Especially Ruka, I don't think I've ever read of a character like him. Such new an interesting view, I can't wait [...]

    16. Copied from my review:I'm quite impressed at how interesting and unique this book has been. I've come and gone from fantasy novels over the years, sensing that the genre was stale and that the books weren't really different from one to the next. This has been a refreshing change. Right from the start it's clear that the author has spent a lot of time on the world and creating a different and unique experience. The characters inside that world feel alive and engaging and make the book tough to p [...]

    17. A long epic book which is a great start to the series. Multiple character points of view, and some very interesting characters. Some readers might find the changes to different characters a little difficult to follow, but the end of the book ties them together well and sets up the sequel. Overall I quite enjoyed the first book and look forward to seeing what happens in the books to follow.

    18. I really enjoyed this book, and I really look forward to more. The world and lore is really interesting and well developed. The characters are relatable and interesting. The one character, Ruka, is very memorable and unique. If you enjoy low fantasy with a bit of an adult theme, this is the book for you.

    19. I'm not one for coming of age stories, but this one was very unique. You watch the main characters grow up quickly with sometimes large pieces of time gone by. The story starts out small, then slowly expands into a large cast and a world that is huge and highly imaginary. Characters are very interesting, enjoyable and engaging. You've also got some characters from godly to down right despicable. The plot is very developed and highly enjoyable, if you like a good dark novel, this is it. I highly [...]

    20. Richard was kind enough to send me a copy of this book in exchange for a review. I think is probably more 4.5 stars than 5, but I did enjoy so much that I am adding it to my 5 star book shelf.I really, really enjoyed most of this story. For most of the book I was trying to figure out where it was going and how it was all going to be woven together. It's not until the end that you get to see what how that is going to happen. Some parts of the book legitimately made me go, "WTF did I just read?!?" [...]

    21. I don’t consider any work of literature to be a “must-read” since I’m not a book tyrant, but if you enjoy the low fantasy genre (magical elements intrude on an otherwise normal world), then I’d highly recommend Kings of Paradise. It’s an inevitability that book one of the Ash and Sand series will be held up against George R. R. Martin’s masterwork, A Song of Ice and Fire, so instead of fighting it, I’ll instead use it as a point of reference for familiarity’s sake.Much like Game [...]

    22. This book's plot is split up for most of the book but that comes together eventually and doesn't detract from the fact that you should probably read this book. I think the biggest takeaway is that the second book will be well set up because of this one, but even with that said, this one is still good.I am on the lower end of rating this book 3 stars, but I can see why people would rate it higher. The plot is unique, the characters are interesting, and the settings vary wildly. I'm excited to see [...]
