glancing referred to, but the primary human anxieties pulsing to life the anxiety of parenthoodthe anxiety of ignoranceand the anxiety caused by the sudden, unexpected helplessnessAnd what matters is what the humans do in response to these driving anxieties Second, after such beautiful and powerful poems, Sims caps the collection with an afterword quoted with my mangling ellipses above where she integrates her source material and life, giving us a lens to view her work, but also bringing us, as readers, deeper into the work s heart As someone who dips in and out of the contemporary poetry scene, I appreciated her taking me by the hand and saying, Look at this, and now this, don t you see how they re connected More than anything, I appreciated how Sims took narratives I knew, given their proliferation in our age from works like The Road and Battlestar Galactica, and let them breath in the wonderful white spaces of her book One such moment of what I mean above came on page 45, where Sims draws on the Oral History of Chernobyl We ll stand between death and its shining idealsWe ll fatten from hunger and light the whole earthWith our comrades debrisWe ll be grim set on livingWe ll bury the headquarters, the schools, and the bathsAnd the water main flag 2 likesLike see review Mar 05, 2016 Greg Bem rated it it was amazing My headed responded to a dizzying gray
