    1. Is it fair to give a church book only 3 stars? I love Jeffrey R. Holland. His conference talks are always so inspiring to me. I picked up this book a couple of years ago, and well it's taken me about that long to get through this book. I love how basic and simple the principles are in this book. A person who is investigating the church could read this book and truly have a better understanding of the Book of Mormon, that the Book of Mormon is truly all about our Savior Jesus Christ. I loved that [...]

    2. This amounts to a running commentary on the Book of Mormon by the Apostle, Jeffrey Holland. It is more or less a sequential treatment, but is broken up by topics related to Christ. While a very fine book, the phrase that came to me in retrospect was Nephi's personal assessment that "neither am I mighty in writing, like unto speaking." Holland, who is unarguably mighty in speaking (perhaps the best among all the Brethren) has done a commendable job, but I was neither moved or enlightened to the e [...]

    3. Dense reading. It took me a while to get comfortable with his writing style. I often had to re-read entire sections. Though this could be my failing, not his.I read about 100 pages before I decided that this book would be best used as a reference book, a supplement, or one of those books where you read a chapter a week. His insights, however, were fantastic. I will never read the story of the brother of Jared the same way again. Amazing. I wouldn't mind owning this book, but I can't imagine readi [...]

    4. I am re-reading this book again because I think it is one of the best ever written concerning the Book of Mormon. Though it is not a "commentary" on the Book or Mormon, it provides the reader with a different perspective on how to approach it. With Elder Holland's insights compounded with a powerful testimony, it is one that stands out on my bookshelf and I'd recommend it to anyone.

    5. Wow! A powerful testimony of Christ, the Book of Mormon, and Joseph Smith. The whole book is awesome, but the final chapter in which Elder Holland bears his testimony is magnificent. As I read the entire book, I could hear Elder Holland's distinctive voice in my mind. It was like he was reading the book to me. It was a marvelous experience.

    6. This was given to me by my parents almost 10 years ago. My dad said he walked into the bookstore and couldn't even consider another book. It's message and Elder Holland's testimony have come to me many times in the years since I received it. I wouldn't consider it a cover to cover read. This, in my opinion, is meant to be a companion to your study of The Book of Mormon.

    7. Jeffrey R. Holland is amazing. He opens up so many doors in the Book of Mormon! He has the ability to make the scriptures so personal, making the Book of Mormon that much warmer a read.

    8. As someone who has read the Book of Mormon numerous times, I was amazed at how much new I learned about that book from Elder Holland. He gives a grand overview of the Book of Mormon in a way that is hard to pick out from a typical read of the Book of Mormon, and beautifully highlights how both the teachings and the symbolism throughout the Book of Mormon are centered on Jesus Christ. I even obtained an answer to one of my long-held questions from reading Elder Holland's book. I would highly reco [...]

    9. Sometimes there are books that take all the joy of reading away, but for one reason or another, you feel you need to finish them. This is one of those books for me. Written by one of my favorite apostles, about an amazing subject, I figured this book would be perfect and I tried to see it through to the end. Unfortunately, I couldn't finish. I really couldn't handle a book that was basically a list of scriptures about Christ, with very little meat to it. It's like a junior version of Jesus the C [...]

    10. Incredible book with many great insights. There are some slower parts throughout, but there are also stretches (like the part about the Brother of Jared, the Law of Moses) that are wonderfully thought-provoking and uplifting. The absolute highlight is the final chapter, Elder Holland's own witness of the Book of Mormon. I think I copied down over half of it and put quotes as notes in my scriptures. Wonderful, inspiring, moving stuff!

    11. To me, it was a regurgitation of basic information. Nothing new or insightful. It was like a history book spouting dates and facts without a storyline or appeal to personal application to pull me into WHY these dates and facts matter to me. Maybe it got better further in, but I wasn't willing to invest the time to find out. This was not at ALL consistent with the exceptional teaching style I've come to expect from Elder Holland.

    12. Elder Holland has the gift of taking a subject and making it accessible and enjoyable. I enjoy his talks as well as his books. I often find myself reading a section and then pondering what I have read and making notations in my scriptures of ideas from his books and talks. It takes longer to get through them, but I find that I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

    13. Excellent book. I love it. This is a must read for any LDS member. I learned a great deal and I'm sure I will read it again and again. Thank you Elder Holland for writing it.

    14. Though it's probably been said before, I'll say it again. This book is like a personal study of the Book of Mormon, only this time you've got Elder Jeffrey R. Holland by your side. The man knows how to express himself. His final chapter, Affirmation, is astounding. I found this a perfect Sunday read, it seemed that about half of the Book of Mormon is quoted therein (minus the war stuff). As the title implies, it is dedicated to the study of Christ, references to Him, prophecies of Him, the appea [...]

    15. Jeffrey R. Holland writes, "The principal and commanding figure in the Book of Mormon, from first chapter to last, is the Lord Jesus Christ. In its unparalleled focus on the Messianic message of the Savior of the World, the Book of Mormon is rightly referred to as God's 'new covenant' with the house of Israel. It is literally a new testament or 'another testament' of Jesus Christ."In his preface, Elder Holland shares with the reader that this book is the result of several years of private study. [...]

    16. Jeffrey R. Holland is fantastic and scholarly, and much of his book is on par with his conference talks. I really learned a lot from the first chapters in particular. I loved his discussion of the the Brother of Jared. From that chapter, I learned the difference between preparatory faith and redemptive faith, and that one definition of faith is to agree unconditionally and in advance to whatever conditions God may require (now and later). I also felt Elder Holland's intense personal testimony in [...]

    17. Excellent book and commentary on the Book of Mormon. Elder Jeffrey R Holland draws out brilliant points about the legitimacy and incredible history of the Book of Mormon as another testament of Jesus Christ. For instance, the book begins with three testimonies by three men who actually saw the Savior -- Nephi, Lehi, and Jacob. It later ends with three testimonies by one man, Moroni, who has seen the Savior. This juxtaposition is strong because it keeps with the principle of by the mouths of thre [...]

    18. My reaction to the book is almost identical tothis reader's review. I would only add that the style Elder Holland writes in almost mimics his public speaking style that we have come to love in general conference and other settings. In my opinion, it doesn't translate well, however, into a 400+ page book. That's what made it a little difficult to read. But at times Elder Holland's impassioned testimony of the power of the BOM and of the its testimony of Christ does offer the reader some wonderful [...]

    19. Another Testament of Jesus Christ"This volume is meant to be more like a meditation upon scripture than a work of scholaship. . . . From the beginning it was intended to be a study of the Book of Mormon's contributions to our understanding of Christ."I generally don't enjoy devotional books; I prefer to read scripture, honest history, or personal narrative. But Elder Holland is among the very best writers (and speakers) in the Mormon church. His style is clear and literate, with little of the bo [...]

    20. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland is a marvelous writer. This took me well over a year to read, as it is meant to be pondered or as Sir Francis Bacon said, "digested," and is one of the classics that I will reach for over and over. It is a masterpiece in its comprehension of key doctrines of the Book of Mormon and how they point to Jesus Christ and the New Covenant. Some of my favorite chapters were on types and shadows and the Law of Moses, the relationship between the Father and the Son, Moroni's eluci [...]

    21. I'm a bit nonplussed as to why I've not heard more about the book over the years. It is a well-organized easy-to-read and logical book that inextricably connects the Book of Mormon to Jesus Christ. In fact, so well does the author manage to make that connection that I came away with new thoughts about the inseparability of the book from its primary subject. If you read nothing from this book other than the last chapter, you will still be well served, so powerful and moving is the author's convict [...]

    22. Finished this one finally. It was well worth it. Very worth it! I love the way Elder Holland has focused on different aspects and pulled together the references all centered on what we can learn of Christ. Recommend to all. And will be useful to refer to and maybe even re-read in the future. One of my favorite quotes (ideas) he brought out is that we know very little about Jesus' life before his mission but only that He "grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom, and the grace of God w [...]

    23. This is an excellent book for ALL members of the Church, new and very established. Do not read it thinking there is just commentary. Elder Holland spends the entire book showing how the scriptures mesh one with another. He uses the same scripture in several places and themes throughout the book. It reads more like Marion G Romney than Thomas S Monson. But by the time you are finished with it, you have a much better understanding of how the Book of Mormon is truly "Another Testament of Jesus Chri [...]

    24. A piece of me feels a little bad that I'm not giving this book a higher rating because of how much I like hearing Holland speak. On the other hand, much of this book is direct quoting of the Book of Mormon. It serves its purpose, to indicate with some commentary from Holland how the Book of Mormon testifies of Jesus Christ, but through much of the book I didn't feel like I was getting anything different than if I were to just open my scriptures and read on my own. There were a few parts that I r [...]

    25. In this book Elder Holland expounds on the teachings concerning Christ that are contained in the Book of Mormon. I feel inadequate to express how I feel about this book. It is deep and profound. For me it was like dipping a cup in the ocean and that's how much I took away from this work and yet that small amount lifted me, taught me and opened my heart and my understanding. My testimony and love for Jesus Christ has increased exponentially!! I would recommend this book to any who would like to t [...]

    26. A second time through this book was almost as insightful as the first. I especially loved the section on the Atonement of Jesus Christ. The clear discussion of moral agency, opposition in all things, the Fall, natural man, probationary state, unconditional gifts, conditional gifts and being spiritually born of God, gave us a great direction for our Family Home Evening discussions and activities for several weeks. I also loved the insights I gained from the chapter called "Types and Shadows: The [...]

    27. OBVIOUSLY it's Jeffrey R. Holland = it was amazing. But I think that's what I missed about it there wasn't enough of HIM; of Elder Holland. The majority of text was quoted scripture and wasn't HIS words. And of course, that is how he intended it to be, but I was truly excited for this book because it was written by him.Favorite Discoveries: The Discussion of the Brother of Jared: Rending the Veil of Unbelief ChapterAnd also the discussion of the scripture: 2 Nephi 31:5 'strait AND straight'. "It [...]
