    4. This is a beautiful story that takes place on the Mekong River in Southeast Asia. It's short, and I don't want to give too much away, but let's just say that it contains mermaids and disillusionment. You can read it here: bit/1CeprBQ

    5. Lily is the oldest of three daughters of a Mekong delta fisherman, and as the oldest, at age fifteen, she's become an experienced fishing boat deckhand. Her mother is dead, died too young for even Lily to have any memory of her, but her dad tells a crazy story: the girls' mother was a mermaid.Mermaids are fish. Unambiguously fish, not intelligent, not beautiful, only superficially human-looking. They are the most desirable fish to sell at the fish market, bringing the highest prices, especially [...]

    6. Conceptually interesting, I guess, but I didn't particularly like the story (abuse! sex! rape! cannibalism! thrill to the transgressiveness/unsubtle messaging of it all!), and as a consequence, wasn't able to suspend disbelief sufficiently to accept the (ridiculous) ending (view spoiler)[the mermaids are sentient and nebulously powerful so why haven't they wiped out the fishermen before? Or talked? And why is the author making a point of showing that the mermaids are speaking Vietnamese? I mean, [...]

    7. While reading this beautifully writen short story, I SAW the ships, the fish, the deck, I felt what the main character was feeling It is written in a captivating and immersive way. Though I would have wanted more from the ending, I still liked the story very much.

    8. Powerful and affecting story. A fairytale allegory about the real-world horror of violence against women told through a horrifying weird-fiction lens. Strongly recommended.

    9. Este relato es soberbio. No había leído nada sobre él así que no tenía ni idea de qué podría encontrarme. Aconsejo a todo el mundo acercarse de la misma manera.La traducción genial. Muy muy recomendable.

    10. yeah i don't think i like mermaids anymore that was preeeetty traumatizingalso, here's an actual synopsis (from the author):''‘The Fisher Queen’’ is about the dark side of the mermaid fishing industry on the Mekong River, and the painful, personal damage of systematic, multigenerational violence against women. It’s a story about growing up too fast, and about having an intense, deep love for your family, only to find out that they’re the monsters they were supposed to be protecting y [...]

    11. Well, that wasuhunique. This was recommended to me by a friend on tumblr and I'm so glad I gave it a shot because I really liked it. I found it creepy and disturbing, but also satisfying. This is a twist on mermaids I've never seen before, so I enjoyed that, but it also kind of made me feel a bit ill to think about. If you want something a bit strange and disconcerting, give this a read.

    12. MY MOTHER WAS A FISH.That's how it starts.I have read another short story by the author, Alyssa Wong, and her writing style is raw and captivating. However, she seems to believe in leaving the end to the imagination of the readers, as both the stories had open endings."THERE ARE MANY VERSIONS of this story, each with a different ending.""After all, mermaids are fish, not people."

    13. Maravilhoso, mas TW: estupro.Você pode ler aqui: fu-gen/crash/fisherqueen-wOu ouvir a história no podcast PseudoPod, que foi como eu li: podtail/podcast/pseudopod/

    14. I love it when short stories creep me out, and go where I least expect them to go. I'm glad this week's topic on BookBabbles was on Underrated Fantasy - I got tons of great recs to add to my TBR.

    15. Structurally the story feels disjointed, jarring and clunky in places, and these bumps made suspension of disbelief difficult and full immersion challenging. Nevertheless, what's unmistakable is the hurricane's force that's packed into this short story, every line vibrates with fury and ire - there's no way anyone can read this without being at least a little affected by it. I definitely was, and I reckon I'll turn this story over back and forth in my head for a few days now - and for that, four [...]

    16. The Fisher Queen, a 2014 Nebula Awards nominee for Best Short Story is written by Alyssa Wong who I found out about on Twitter and am so glad that I did! In the story, we follow Lily, a fisherman as she goes on another job on the sea and finds a mermaid unlike any other. One who says, "daughter" the first time she sees Lily. If you like The Little Mermaid, that's great but this right here isn't a fairytale. This is a different kind of mermaid tale, one where mermaids are delicacies. One still wh [...]

    17. Lily and her sisters don't have a Mom. Their father says their mother was a mermaid and she left to go back to the sea. But that can't be because mermaids are fish, a delicacy, and she and her father are fishermen, human fishermen. On a successful fishing trip the crew catches a mermaid that looks different from the others. She calls Lily "L¯uk¯s¯aw" (daughter), again and again. That night Lily can't sleep for thinking about the mermaid and because of the horrible whimpering noises the capture [...]

    18. Relato corto sobre sirenas. Le echaré un vistazo a la autora para ver que más tiene porque me gusta su estilo narrativo.

    19. Alyssa Wong has been deservedly shortlisted for the Joseph W. Campbell Award for New Writers for her work in 2014 and 2015, and this story is part of why she made it to the list. This story was shortlisted for the 2014 Nebula Award, and Alyssa went on to win the 2015 Nebula Award for her short story “Hungry Daughters of Starving Mothers”You can go listen to “The Fisher Queen” over at Pseudopod or read it at FU-Gen .

    20. A dark and thought-provoking tale. Mermaids are here, but do not expect anything close to your favorite Disney film. The moral and philosophical issues here are heavy, but it doesn't come across as preachy or overly message heavy. Of the seeming overabundance of stories that have been printed in the past year involving mermaids, this is probably the best one I've read out of the bunch. This is another one that I'm incredibly disappointed to not see on the Hugo ballotContent warnings: Non-consensu [...]
