    1. Julia sits down to write her review of The Outcast Dead. She has read all of the books in this series and enjoyed them. However she's torn about what to write about this instalment. The story worked well, encompassing two main plotlines, both centered on the relationships between mother and child. All the familiar characters made an appearance and somehow Cathbad seemed less annoying this time round. And yet, something makes Julia hesitate. It's the way that Elly Griffiths writes all her books in [...]

    2. A wonderful series that combines archeology, mystery and some amazing characters, one who has a delightful three year old. The personal relationships are almost as interesting as the storylines. Of course Cathbad, the druid, is one of my favorites. Also appreciate the author's not at the end, explaining what was true in history, the buildings, graveyards and churches as well as people, in this particular installment.

    3. I think it is important to say before I start this review that I love Elly Griffiths. She has fast become one of my favourite authors and this book does nothing to change this. Elly Griffiths is that rare writing talent that can mix; historical fact, familiar character developments and a dame good thriller into one. This book is one of the best I have read from her and as usual I find myself enthralled by the historical information which is passed throughout this book. The book also has a fair a [...]

    4. I love this series. The characters are (mostly) people I just really enjoy spending time with, and I don't much need the pretext of a plot. Which accounts for the 3 stars in this review, because otherwise this book is pretty thin. It seems to mark a transition in the series story structure from local archaeological expedition/thematically related murder, which had been stretched a little farther than it could go, to Ruth being affiliated with a lurid-archaeology TV show, which allows for a wider [...]

    5. The Outcast Dead is the sixth book Ruth Galloway by Elly Griffiths and as usually I'm having a bit of a problem reading the book, because even though I often enjoy the stories in the books I just can't stand the characters. Well, I don't hate them, they just annoy me, things they say or thinks can make me mentally roll my eyes. So when I pick up and read a book by Elly Griffith will I know that Ruth will as usually always bring up in her mind how fat she is and how thin everyone else is. Nelson, [...]

    6. This is the last in the series at present; a series I have enjoyed very much. The first book was just great and this, the last one, is just fantastic.Ruth finds some bones which appear to be of the notorious child killer Mother Hook (aka Jemima Green) who was hanged for her crimes some 150 years previously. Nelson, simultaneously, is working on a case of a mother, Liz Donaldson, whose two children, Samuel and Isaac, had died suddenly in infancy and now the new baby, David, has suddenly died at 8 [...]

    7. This one reminded me a lot of A Dying Fall, reaching back into the past for a significant part of the mystery. I also developed a distinct fondness for Dave Clough in this book - his character just keeps getting more and more engaging.

    8. Ruth Galloway is involved in an archaeological dig at Norwich Castle. She finds what appears to be the body of Jemima Green (Mother Hook) a Victorian baby farmer who was convicted of murdering the babies in her care. A TV company expresses interest in filming part of the dig for a series about women who kill. Shy Ruth is reluctant to take part but her boss, Phil, is keen on the publicity. DCI Harry Nelson – Ruth’s friend and father of her daughter, Kate – is involved in investigating a pos [...]

    9. After the highs of Dying Fall and Dr Ruth Galloway and her fantastic ensemble cast going "on tour" in Blackpool, The Outcast Dead is a thrilling and triumphant return to the Fens for everyone's favourite dysfunctional family! Introducing new characters to the party and serving up a whopping three mysteries into a single novel, this is once again an utter delight. As Ruth discovers what looks to be the remains of the reputed body-farmer and child murderess Mother Hook, in the grounds of Norwich C [...]

    10. In what is the sixth Ruth Galloway novel, The titled character, a forensic archaeologist, is involved in a local dig and uncovers remains that might be those of a notorious child killer of the 19th century. This act, though outwardly not much different than other digs she has been involved in, unleashes something entirely new---television and television commentators who want to report on the bones of a woman who killed!Meanwhile, there also seems to be a modern day child kidnapper in the area to [...]

    11. First Sentence: Every year a ceremony is held at Norwich Castle for the bodies in the paupers’ graves: the Service for the Outcast Dead.Archeologist Ruth Galloway is on a dig at Norwich Castle when she uncovers the remains of a woman who may be Jemima Green, aka Mother Hook. She was a woman in the 1800s, thought to have taken in orphaned and abandoned children, only to murder and sell them to a resurrectionist. Her boss interests a television station in including the dig in their program, “W [...]

    12. Published 6th February by Quercus.Thank you for the review copy via Netgalley.Ruth Galloway uncovers the bones of what might be a notorious Victorian child murdress and a baby snatcher known as “The Childminder” threatens modern-day Norfolk in the latest irresistible mystery from Elly Griffiths.Yep irresistible is right. I’ve read all of the Ruth Galloway novels but this is the first one I’ve read since I started the blog and serious reviewing and actually I would say its one of my favou [...]

    13. Forensic archaeologist Ruth Galloway uncovers the bones of a Victorian murderess while a baby snatcher threatens modern-day Norfolk in this exciting new entry in a beloved series.Every year a ceremony is held in Norwich for the bodies in the paupers' graves: the Service for the Outcast Dead. Ruth has a particular interest in this year's proceedings. Her recent dig at Norwich Castle turned up the body of the notorious Mother Hook, who was hanged in 1867 for the murder of five children. Now Ruth i [...]

    14. I've been reading the Ruth Galloway series in order, and this one is my favorite so far! There is less emphasis on the archeology and history, although it is still present. And there is more emphasis on human relationships, and in particular, parent and child. I couldn't put this book down!150 years ago, a childminder was hanged for murdering children in her care. In present time, two children are abducted. Another family has lost their children to SIDS. Through the weaving of the families into [...]

    15. When I requested The Outcast Dead from the published via Edelweiss, there is a box that asks for the specific reason for requesting this title. I filled in - because Ruth Galloway is my hero. This is probably one of my favorites in the series. There’s a lot going on with Ruth having found the bones of a woman accused of being a baby murderer many years ago. Detective Nelson is busy working the case of a modern day baby murderer. I connected with this character from the very beginning. Ruth has [...]

    20. Ruth and Nelson and Kate and Cathbad and Judy and all the wonderful, amazing characters of Elly Griffiths' Ruth Galloway mysteries are back in all their glorious splendor. Taking a trip to Norwich once a year to be with these characters and the stories that bring them all together is one of my favorite reading experiences. Characters, plot, setting--no one does these any better than Elly Griffiths. She is the puppeteer extraordinaire in creating a world of suspense and emotion using the elements [...]

    21. This series is one of my favorites, and The Outcast Dead is the best so far. Griffiths continues her theme of parenthood with two storylines. Mother Hook is an infamous Victorian child murderer who is alleged to have killed at least twenty children in her care and sold their bodies to the resurrection men (grave robbers who sold corpses to medical schools). Against everything, Ruth believes the woman to be innocent, and the reader gets to follow along as she finds information and pieces things t [...]

    22. I should begin by saying that I have read all of the books so far in the Ruth Galloway series. I truly love this series, it is one of my favorites. I have been eagerly awaiting this, book 6, in the series. And it was fine, but for some reason, just fine. The characters of Ruth, Cathbad, and DI Harry Nelson are excellent as usual. The reader can see growth in these characters, within themselves and their relationships with each other and other characters. The mystery still involves a background of [...]

    23. This is the best mystery book I have read in some time and I read a lot of mysteries. Ruth Galloway, a forensic archaeologist in Norwich England, has uncovered the body of Mother Hook. Mother Hook, who has her own nursery rhyme, was hanged in 1867 for the murder of five children. A woman with a hook who took in unwanted children was an easy figure to dislike. A TV show "Women Who Kill" decide to make a documentary about Mother Hook and arrive in Norwich with a crew and a handsome historian, Fran [...]

    24. In order to do an honest review I have to preface this by saying that I have read all the Ruth Galloway mysteries and may someday re-read this series because it is one of my favorites, and I feel as if I'm revisiting old friends and catching up on their lives with each book. So, I'm biased and there it is. That being said, this was a terrific addition to the series as Ruth Galloway works on a mystery about a childminder from the past while DCI Harry Nelson and his team solves a case of kidnappin [...]

    25. The Outcast Dead by Elly Griffiths. The well known pauper's grave just outside of Norwich Castle has a yearly event or celebration This that celebration has taken a mysterious turn. Ruth has uncovered the remains, or so it seems, of a notorious child murderess known as Mother Hook. Mother Hook was convicted and hung for the murder of 5 children who were in her care.Ruth's discovery takes on an entirely new outlook when she is asked to be a major part in a TV program of Women Who Kill. All this ho [...]

    26. Another cracking book in the Ruth Galloway series. Ruth’s baby is growing up, but calls everyone dada, pleasing some, and giving others heart attacks in the presence of their wives. The world-building is solid, believable, and I’m fully entrenched in it. So my review may be biased.I was hooked straight away with this one, with its potent mix of dead babies (cot death or something else?) and the ghoulish glee that an archaeology tv programme maker exudes when talking about the discovery of th [...]

    27. My apologies.I shouldn't write a review after night shift Elly Griffiths has a lot of gall. Imagine having the nerve to create a series based on a smart, slightly overweight (read: normal) woman who is a professor & single mom. But does she stop there? Noooo. Then she adds an interesting well rounded cast that runs the gamut from conservative middle aged cop to flighty intuitive druid & plunks them all into stories containing murder, mayhem, archaeology, humour & evolving personal liv [...]

    28. Elly Griffiths has done a wonderful job in creating the much loved Ruth Galloway and her world, based mostly around Norfolk and the surrounding areas. She manages to merge tense murder mystery with almost soap like drama and love affairs. Each book is also written in the present tense which brings a brilliant presence and 'up to the minute' excitement which is missing from other books. The Outcast Dead follows Ruth and Nelson on their respective cases. Nelson is investigating the death of a littl [...]

    29. The only sad thing about an Elly Griffiths novel is when it has ended. This was truly a riveting read which really kept me guessing. A mother reports that her child has apparently died from seems like SIDS. If it wasn't for the fact that she had two other children who died under similar circumstances, DI Nelson would have just chalked it up to bad luck. She is the perfect woman who lives in a perfect house. The only problem is that her husband has left her for a younger, more imperfect woman. Ne [...]
