    1. 1913 can probably be considered the buffer year between the end of the Gilded Age (loss of Titanic in 1912) and the beginning of the Monstrous Age (WWI in 1914). Innocence still prevailed in many parts of America, where people believed you could make something of yourself if you worked hard and dreamed the dream. In that year of innocence, Francis Ouimet walked across the street from his childhood house to start playing in the U.S. Open of golf. Yup, just walked across the street. His caddie was [...]

    2. This is one of those picture book biographies, whether you are a fan of golf or not, that has immense appeal. It's about not giving up no matter the obstacles, age or station in life. It's about following a dream. Author Brad Herzog and illustrator Zachary Pullen really get this right. My full review: bit/191xuEF

    3. This story is tailor-made for Brad Herzog's talents! It has a wonderfully lyrical pace and charming illustrations. Would be a great gift for golf-lovers (Father's Day?) or sports lovers, but I am really neither, and I loved it. I'm buying it for my sons as it has a great message of the value of friendship and loyalty. And it's just a really good story!

    4. This is simply a great story! Learning more about the true story of two underdogs in the golf world (Francis Ouimet and his ten year old caddie, Eddie Lowery) leads you to cheer them on throughout the story. Even those familiar with the story will learn a thing or two! Wonderful illustrations offer a feel of the time period (1913).

    5. A surprisingly delightful read! Even if you don't like sports (I don't) or if you're not particularly a fan of the illustrations (I'm not), you can't help but get caught up in this uplifting, feel-good story about two underdogs and the game of golf.
