    1. The cover of this book was plain (and I'm guessing purple because of the character's favourite colour), with a lack-lustre name of the author at the bottom and although I liked the title (well-known sayings are always fun to use as titles) it didn't stand out. I could understand that the author was probably trying to recapture a schoolgirl's school book, but this excellent book deserves a cover that speaks: buy me! and it didn't.It's a YA novel, but highlights bullying at school in a unique way [...]

    2. Modern day Judy Blume indeed I can't wait to gift it to every special young lady in my life. While I'm decades away from this period in my life, I identified with the story from start to finish.

    3. My #1 Teen lit book of the year! Uproariously funny, full of wit and a true reflection of teen girls. Non-stop page turner. Don't miss this kindle.

    4. I received a free kindle copy of Ugly Stick by Joy Givens, published by Tributaries Press in an promotion in exchange for a fair review. I gave it five stars. This young adult novel about an ugly stick curse was very entertaining & I enjoyed it. I will look for more of Joy Given's work.April Somerfield joined the Yearbook committee. At the first meeting she described the group agreeing with the committee chair Vivienne. "We all nodded like obedient little bobble-heads dolls."April's mother i [...]

    5. "Ugly Stick" is a great ugly duckling story that I could very easily see in movie form. The writing is contemporary, wickedly funny and endearing all at the same time, the characters are well developed and easy to relate to. April's predicament of being an ugmo who doesn't fit in has a great twist to it, and even the uptight enemy of the story, Vivienne, has some sympathetic and relatable qualities. A great touch is the use of the twitter texts, which ties Ugly Stick into a more modern adaptatio [...]

    6. With so many young adult books set in a post-apocalyptic/dystopian United States, it was incredibly refreshing to read a story in a more common (albeit challenging) setting: high school. It is easy for the reader to sympathizes with April, a misfit who wants nothing more to remain unnoticed by the twitter bullies. Givens provides more than just a tale of high school woes; she integrates a fantastic SyFy twist that drives the plot on. This is just the kind of story so many young women need to hel [...]

    7. Really enjoyed this book! It read very similar to Meg Cabot, and it was a very quick read. The only reason I didn't give it 4 stars is that it kind of beats you over the head with the moral of the story. I understand it's for younger readers, but kids, and especially girls in the age range it's targeted to, I think would have been receptive to the meaning without it being quite as reiterated as it seemed to me. But overall, a really fun read that I'd recommend to anyone!

    8. A wonderful YA novel written by a fellow Pitt alumnus and choir friend of mine. Not only did it have a great message behind it that I think all young women should embrace, but it was really funny for a YA book (and not that typically cheesy humor that is so common among books today)

    9. One reviewer called it "Judy Blume for the digital age" and that's dead on. I'm only sorry this character's story was wrapped up in just one book.

    10. This story is short and sweet with a great message, great writing, and great humor - all while being clean and not taking God's name in vain once.

    11. I expected to like this more, so maybe if I had gone in with no expectations I would have liked it more. (view spoiler)[I think I would have liked it more if April learned to like herself before she was beautiful. And if her experience of being unattractive and bullied had given her some empathy and kindness, instead of ammunition when she was beautiful. I didn't feel happy for her despite her repentance. (hide spoiler)] It's hard to love yourself sometimes, no matter what you look like, I get t [...]

    12. Ugly Stick by Joy Givens is a story about a girl named April, who feels that she is really ugly. She is a very awkward and shy girl who only hangs out with her best friend, Ani. She and Ani end up joining the yearbook committee which leads to a shocking discovery for April. She finds out that there is an "ugly-duckling" sort of curse on the women in her family. Feeling betrayed by her mom for not telling her about this curse, April makes a choice that will change her life forever, and not necess [...]
