    1. Jimi just broke my heart, in passages like this:"I think I'm a better guitarist than I ever was, but I have never been really good. Every year, like my writing, it slips further and further away. The music I might hear I can't get on the guitar."On the other hand, I'm glad for him:"I see miracles every day nowspirituality and things in the head, they're always there. I mean, it gets better and better all the time. I'm always having visionsIt's out of what's directing me. What I was here in the f [...]

    2. Jimi Hendrix is one of my top five favorite guitar players of all time! If it weren't for him who knows if the awesome distorted sounds of the electric guitar would exist today! This book is a really great collection of interviews, diary entries, poems, lyrics, musings and other miscellaneous things written by Hendrix himself. It also offers a glimpse into his mind and expands upon the origins of some of his most popular songs. Apparently, he wrote the lyrics for Purple Haze after reading a short [...]

    3. This book arranges interviews, letters (presumably full text) to family and fans, a letter to an album cover designer, and an attorney's letter to him into a chronology for Hendrix's life. The editors have short intros to each piece citing what was happening in Hendrix's life at the time. There are a few photos. A layout has changing text sizes and shades of purple. The wonderful line drawings have a signature that does not match any attribution (probably a copyright holder and not the artist). W [...]

    4. Great book here on a great man, better, because the only person talking (besides a number of anonymous interviewers) is the man himself. I always enjoy hearing artists themselves describe their lives, it's so much better than hearing it from those who either love or hate them, with comparable agendas. And since his life was indeed cut short far too soon, the document itself reads pretty close to as good as an autobiography anyone can get from it. Good gift for anyone who loves Hendrix for all th [...]

    6. I bought this at the gift store in the Handel&Hendrix museum in London, and probably should have read up on it before the impulse purchase. This is essentially an attempt at an unauthorized "autobiography" by editing together a bunch of interviews and letters into a book. It's pretty uneven, and the book's flow is a bit jagged. Hendrix interviews can be entertaining to watch or listen to, but his somewhat nonlinear train of thought don't entirely translate into biographical writing. Also, wh [...]

    9. "When I get up on stage and sing, that's my whole life. That's my religion. I am Electric Religion." I have always wanted to crawl around in Jimi's brain and absorb all the information and knowledge he was spinning around. This allows you to do just that. You get a very intimate glimpse at the life of a guitar legend. As you're reading this, you just close your eyes and imagine the world through his eyes, what he felt and thought at a time where the world was divided. Absolutely beautiful. "Thos [...]

    11. I felt like I had just been through the mind of a genius. I felt so much more empowered and so much more motivated as a musician after reading this book. definitely a must read for fans and musicians alike.

    13. I almost put this book down. Then.Jimi's voice clicked with me. Jimi in Jimi's words. Taken from scraps of paper, backs of matchboxes, candy wrappers, apparently anything that Jimi could get his hands on, this account of the guitar great's life is told through the prism his cataclysmic four year rise to fame.Jimi is one of those guyso creative to live a conventional life. As another reviewer duly noted, Jimibroke my heart when he says towards the end of his life that he wasn't a very good guitar [...]

    14. It is very satisfying to read from his own writtings, his mind, ideas, experiences, point of view, etc.The only thing is that I can't help to think that there were things not shown or told about his life. We only see the "good" Jimi there must have been more which could have been researched of put in the book.Still, I learnt too much about him and the way he saw life life. It is a fascinating to understand more his music and himself. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to know him more. Pe [...]

    15. FIRST LINE REVIEW: "Well, the night I was born lord, I swear the moon turned a fire red." Bristling with fiery, poetic prose taken from Hendrix' diaries, letters, interviews and other writings, the result is a profound and movingd sadly briefip through the 3 or 4 years when he was changing the rock music landscape. Painful to think of all that was taken from us far far too soon

    16. This book is such an important narrative of Jimi's life in his own words, minus all the rubbish that stardom (and it's misinterpretation) comes with. A must-read for anybody who's a Hendrix or a rock fan. A music fan too!

    17. Jimi was ahead of his time. I found him to be very human when reading this not just the guitar god that he is so often remembered as.

    19. I'd never heard of Starting At Zero when I received it as a Christmas gift from my wife. She was all, "Does that sound interesting?" I said, "Yes!" "You can tell me if it doesn't," she replied, doubtfully. "I can't wait to read it! Thank you!"Essentially, as more than one reviewer has pointed out, this is as close to a Hendrix autobiography as you're likely to get. Peter Neal combed through miles of Hendrix interviews, quotes, letters and writing and compiled what is, in effect, Jimi Hendrix tel [...]

    20. It’s funny the way people love the dead. You have to die before they think you are worth anything. Once you are dead, you are made for life. When I die, just keep on playing the records.-Jimi Hendrix It's a collection of Hendrix quotes that come mostly from interviews, song lyrics, diaries and poems. So this is not an autobiography. Although Hendrix story is well-known to his fans but if you're less familiar with his life, you'll still need to find yourself another book on Jimi's life and art. [...]

    21. 5 stars because they are Jimi's words, the closest we'll ever get to an autobiography. In the "afterword" Michael Fairchild posits Jimi's live concert work wasn't up to the quality of his studio work and is fair-minded (as far as this this 'view' allows) about why. What he's missing is a couple of points: First: when Jimi was fresh and tapped in, his live work is off the charts, Band of Gypsys case in point (he acknowledges this). Many other amazing live performances/ examples to hear. Secondly: [...]

    22. Such an interesting book and so poignant. He comes across as very sweet and funny with just a completely different world view. When he describes the music he wanted to make it seems even more of a loss. As Jimi says: "The English music nature calls for pounds and pounds of melody" - or at least mine does so I would love to have heard him play with some of the Malian musicians - great blues sound with loads of melody!!This was England in 1966 - bad food and good cops!Q: English Food?A: Oh god! ma [...]

    24. Honestly, when I picked this one up at the library I had little faith that it would be good, given Jimi's penchant for babbling (I figured I'd be tossing it back after 10 or 20 pages). Yet it turned out to be excellent and quite propulsive. And the transition from background info to "life in the moment" was accomplished seamlessly (I didn't even notice it happening). Admittedly I could've done without the last 20 pages or so, which did indeed become rather imponderablebut I suppose it all served [...]

    25. 27 kulübünün üyesi, büyük müzisyen, gitarist jimi hendrix'in hayatı.

    26. May this be love or just confusion,Born out of frustrationWracked feelings of not being able to make true physical love to The Universal Gypsy QueenTrue free expressed music.Darling Guitar please rest. Amenwords written by Jimi HendrixThis is why I loved this book. Jimi was a poet. The Universal Spirit of poetry & song.
