    1. This is a serious warning: don’t begin this book if you have a meal, a meeting or an urgent appointment any time soon. You won’t make it.This wonderful Swedish thriller begins with Daniel Brandt receiving a letter from his twin brother, Max. The brothers were brought up mainly apart, meeting only on their shared birthday, and Max’s bizarre behaviour in the past means that Daniel regards any contact with wariness. However Max is now in a Swiss clinic which is helping him manage his bi-polar [...]

    2. Meh!

    4. Have you ever read a book that makes you go what the fuck for most of it? But then you keep reading anyway? This is one of those books. It was odd. But not in a bad way. It was very different from everything I read. The closest thing I can compare it to is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - but honestly, it's nothing like that book. I think I feel a resemblance because they're both thrillers that have been translated into English. (I also never made it through Larsson's book - it was boring to me). [...]

    6. solid 4 stars An extremely enjoyable plot, characters, and plot twists to keep a reader wanting more. I was really surprised how much I loved this book, despite its translation from Swedish to English, which sometimes led to unfamiliar sentence structure and language usage. Basic plot revolves around two twin brothers, one (Daniel) who lives in the U.S. and the other (Max) in a private Swiss psychiatric facility. When Daniel receives a letter from his brother asking him to visit him in Sweden, D [...]

    8. Dark. Psychological. Nearly every character a pathological liar. Like Alice in Wonderland in the real world, assuming the trippy aspects of Wonderland would grow dark and sinister in their transition to reality.Really good book. My only complaint is the anticlimactic ending. But everything leading up to the ending is edge-of-your-seat, deeply philosophical, intelligent, page turning stuff.

    9. Identical twins Max and Daniel were raised separately when Max was too reliant on his brother as a baby and wasn’t developing as a normal toddler should. Their parents ultimately divorced and one twin went with each parent. The brothers only saw each other once a year on their birthday, and the visits never went well since they twins were virtually strangers but were still drawn to each other. While Daniel lived a life being doted upon by his loving mother and soaking up books and history with [...]

    10. The back of THE DEVIL'S SANCTUARY says that it has the atmosphere of Shutter Island and the intensity of Jussi Adler-Olsen so I was expecting something well big.And for quite a while this was a fascinating scenario. Estranged identical twins, Daniel and Max, were parted by their parents separation when they were very young. Daniel had a fairly normal, if not slightly doted on upbringing by his mother and her parents, Max not quite as lucky staying with his distant father and raised mostly by a n [...]

    11. A good author knows how to catch your attention and draw you in with the first few paragraphs. I would not have bothered reading it based on the first few lines if it were a case of just me looking for a book to read. I did keep reading but it wasn't that enjoyable. The word choices and odd phrasing I could overlook as just differences in culture, however I just couldn't connect with the characters or get into the story. I kept shaking my head and counting how many pages were left to read. The i [...]

    12. ARC provided by NetGalley:This was a deliciously disturbing book for me. It's about twin brothers, Max and Daniel. Daniel is a normal kind of guy while Max is a disturbed individual currently residing in a psychiatric facility. When Daniel goes for a visit, he finds that his brother's facility is more like a luxury resort. Somehow, Max convinces his brother to trade places with him so he can supposedly "take care of some business" for a few days. And as you can probably predict, Max doesn't retu [...]

    13. Really 3.5 stars. This is a good thriller with a twist. When Daniel Brandt gets a letter from his twin brother Max to visit him at a private clinic, he decides it's worth going as he can spend some time holidaying in the area. However, as in all good thrillers, things do not go according to plan.Entertaining thriller, the only negative is that it slightly loses it's edge and it might have been better slightly shorter.

    15. Good plot, good setting, good characters and well written, worth a read.My 2 stars is given to the movement of the plot: lethargic yet enthralling at the beginning then the climax.d that's it, the end.It felt like too much of a rush to the ending, miniscule detail, lack of scenes.

    16. Dramatic and chilling. I was kept guessing the entire time! On par with other thrillers like Gone Girl.

    17. Fascinating psychological thriller. The idea is simple. Twin brothers. One at a supposed medical retreat/spa type facility that treats varying degrees of mental illness. The other comes for a visit. The brother in the facility just wants to switch places for a few days so he can get some personal affairs in order and gain access to some money that wasn't so legally obtained. The other brother, Daniel, agrees thinking its only going to be for a few days. As the days stretch on, Daniel begins to r [...]

    18. I was thoroughly impressed by this novel. It took a while for me to get into it since it started a bit slowly, but when it picked up, I was HOOKED! After finding out what Himmelstal really was, I found myself constantly analyzing the other characters trying to figure out who could and could not be trusted. The more I learned, the more questions I had and the more eager I was to find out more information about the community and its residents. The twist at the end had me in shock and, once the tru [...]

    21. The premise of the book was unusual and potentially a lot more interesting than it turned out to be. It ended up being a little too far-fetched, in my opinion, and had a very unsatisfying ending. I found myself just wishing it would be over!

    22. I love slow-motion, claustrophobic thrillers that ratchet up tension gradually instead of starting up with a bang and piling up bodies every time the plot hits a snag. If you share my preferences, this book is for you. And as a bonus, it has a very interesting discussion of posthumanism at the end. I can't say more for fear of revealing the solution but it is worth reading through the weird tribulations of the main character to get to it. Also if you are an only child (like me), having read the [...]

    25. Daniel receives a letter from his identical twin brother Max. They had never gotten along so well during their childhood and had grown up separated, Daniel with their mother and Max with their father. The boys met once a year, on their shared birthday and everyone in the family agreed that once a year was more than enough. Now, all grown up, parents gone, and for the first time in what seems like forever, they are to meet again. Max had invited Daniel to his luxurious rehabilitation clinic, all e [...]

    27. Marie Hermanson (born 1956) is a Swedish writer and journalist who has written several intriguing novels with a surrealistic touch. As far as I know, her earlier novels have not been translated into English, but this one has. The Swedish title is Himmelsdalen – ‘Paradise Valley’ – but in English it has been named The Devil’s Sanctuary. This in itself I think reflects the duality at the very core of this psychological thriller: The difficulty (sometimes) of deciding what is what, what i [...]

Man anar diagnoser.

    29. The Devil's Sanctuary was a great book that kept you on your toes. Although the book was very good cover to cover the ending wasn't what I expected, you could even say I found it disappointing. Throughout the book Daniel is trying to get someone, or anyone, to believe him that he is not his psychopathic twin brother, Max. Finally a clinic psychiatrist tells Daniel he has believed him all along, and actually planned the switch between Max and Daniel. Dr. Fisher wanted to study Daniel and how his [...]
