    1. This is a very dense and scholarly book, but quite readable. The author examines Pliny's letters to discern what life was like for women in the Roman Empire. The chapters are divided into the various roles women played - wife, mother, sister, etc. There were quite a few unfamiliar names, my favorite being Ummidia Quadratilla. Some other good ones are Domitia Lucilla, Dasumia Polla, Annia Galeria Faustina and Arreciba Tertulla. The endnotes are very good and numerous, one chapter having 335 of th [...]
