    1. A very touching read. I cannot stop my tears from falling as I flip through the page. As a Cambodian woman, 25 years old - the same age to Bophana when she was caught to S21, tortured and killed, I feel extremely painful. How could the Khmer rouge be so fooled? So cruel? How could they put the fear of losing power instead of humanity? This is the consequence a country that's run by the uneducated, power and money driven leaders. I wish and pray that the history will not repeat itself.

    2. This is the biography of Bophana from Becker's longer book "When the War Was Over". This is a very sad read--she was tortured to death at the Tuol Sleng Prison for the crime of writing love letters. A story of Bophana reveals the struggle and bravery of a young Cambodian woman to keep her love alive with her lover in hardship. The regime was cruel and inhumane and finally it executed the lives of the innocent couple and demolished their dreams of being together.

It seems to have been translated from Khmer, even though the American author must have written it in English in the first place. Whatever the background, the subject matter is stunning -- Bophana is a young Cambodian woman who wrote about her love for her husband at a time when this was illegal. She's been called the Anne Frank of Cambodia. Anybody who doesn't know about the Pol Pot era should read up, this or something else. We c [...]

    5. Sometimes called the Anne Frank of Cambodia, Bophana was a young woman who lived through the horrors of the Khmer Rouge era. Her story is touching and inspirational. Everyone who wants to understand the recent history of Cambodia should read this book.
