    4. The story of a young girl from rural bengal who is very conscious of her right to live and be respected. A rebel, she can face her venerable father, whom she adores, and point out his mistake. A fighter for truth and her search for the meaning of a Woman's life. Her struggle to educate her daughter and the protest when she is thwarted in this by her husband and mother in law. A strong and courageous character who we all admire but would rather not have in our own families.

    7. What a book!! What a great author!!My salutations to 'Ashapurna Devi', Boss you are incomparable, for me she is the BEST Bengali author ever for fiction. The writing style, the granularity, the characterizations, the clarity, the consistency-- all of it come alive with such a great force, that the seasoned reader is overwhelemed! After this I continued reading her other books (Subarnalatha & Bakul Katha- both Hindi translations) & I was ever-amazed to see that her grip as a story-teller ne [...]

    8. Having read the Malayalam translation of 'Pratham Prathishruthi' i dearly miss not having known Bengali! The translation is awesomebut to think there always are things lost in translation makes this one even more inspiring a book to reach out for.d the depth of Bengali literature should definitely at par or even more than Malayalam!Moving on to the rest of the trilogy " Suvarnalatha" n "Bakul Katha" offers a brighter vision of the transformation of bengali culture, society and the life of women. 11. Read it years ago, as a teenager. Got hold of the book last week, and started reading, just realized, I remember every plot, every scene, almost every dialogue, even after 15 years! And btw, my memory usually suck. This is such a beautiful portrait. One of the best books I ever read.

    12. বইটা পড়ে "সত্যবতী" হতে চেয়েছিলাম এতোটাই প্রিয়!!!

    13. Ashapurna Devi is a very popular Bengali author and is my mum’s favourite – she often discusses her work with me. Thanks to a small Asian writing section at my local library - I found a translated version of one of her most popular novels – Pratham Pratisruti; the English translation by Indira Chowdhury is called ‘The First Promise’ - literal translation of the Bengali title. It is an epic novel which spans across four generations; the story largely follows Satyavati’s existence from [...]

    16. This is the first part of a trilogy, about three generations of women at various stages of liberty of personhood. This one is about the first generation well taught with education and values given by her father. Satyavatie has been taught by her father before she was married off. She dreamt of carrying on the dream of blossoming of mind, of education, in her family, her children. She is married and has children of her own and they include a daughter, a piece of her own heart - she wishes to educ [...]

    18. Sometimes, life comes full circle as you turn the pages of a book. This book is one such. Separated by almost two centuries from the characters in this bright, bold, beautiful, incandescent, spacious novel, the sense of identity and home that a Bengali (Indian) woman revels in while experiencing the life, times, places, customs, mores, morals which are so skilfully, vividly, wisely, intelligently and thought-provokingly narrated in this novel results in epiphany, empathy, admiration and a burnin [...]

    20. A powerful story written by a woman about another. Dealing with the life of Satyabati, the protagonist, the author holds up live the life and life style of the women in pre independence era. A time when submission to the tradition and caste norms was considered all and all, Satyabati and her father rise up to be a benchmark for all in their own way. However, like always their thoughts and ideas meet with opposition especially Satyabati 's for she being a girl. Miles ahead of their times, the pro [...]

    21. Have always been a fan of Bengali literature When dad told me "Pratham Prathishruthi" is an awesome book, never thought it was this brilliant. After taking a trip to the streets of Kolkatta through Bimal Mitra's pages, Ashapoorna Devi comes as another wonder. The conviction, the strength, the struggle and determination of so many 'Sathyavathi's is the reason behind the freedom that Indian women enjoy today. Truely, Ashapoorna Devi's magnum opus. All set to read the next book in trilogy, 'Subarno [...]

    22. This was not an easy read by any means, but so unique to me that I enjoyed the whole thing. The Brahman culture in India at the turn of the last century was a very unfamiliar milieu to me. And since it was not written by a contemporary person interpreting it for the modern reader, but actually during the time, it retained a lot that seemed strange and odd to me. I feel like I got a glimpse into a very different world.

    24. a wonderful book. While reading it I found myself thinking that I found myself with a little treasure in my hands. Beautiful language. Nice and interesting story. Sometimes a little bit confusing with all the names and who is whose relative.

    25. One of the best novels by Ashapurna Devi.e plot, characters are so well sketched out that one, atleast I, wished to be in the protagonist's shoesOne can read it as many times you wantThe author even brings into light, wonderfully, the Calcutta and the villages of that time
