    1. If you were to design an IP system, you'd use classes with names like Image, Color, Filter, LUTFilter, Histogram or something *remotely* resembling that, right? Not here. If anything this book is an exercise in completely ignoring the problem domain wrt OO Design. The functionality of the system is hidden, more like intentionally encrypted, in a GUI hierarchy of Frames.Ever been behind someone trying to go past who not only wouldn't move, but seemed to know you were behind him and just stood [...]


    2. I am among those amteurs who fancy image processing a lot. I readily recommend this book to the reader community and so also for the java programmers. This book is unique in its own sense. I do not want to reinvent the wheel, this nook is ideal for me. It clears the basic fundamental about the image processing and how to use java for the same. The journey throught the book will give u the idea of how exhaustive this book is in term of image processing algorithms and easier ways of implement [...]


    3. It is good that this book does not use Swing.Swing is slow. Also, it is good that this book does not use Java2D. Java2D is not available on all platforms. If the book used Java2d, it would not work under Mac or Linux.The large class library is easy to use in other programs.Many of the algorithms are difficult to implement on your own. This book can save lots of time.Kahindu itself is a large program. The nested inheritance structure makes adding features easier.


    4. This sentance from the book's forward sumarizes this book well. "This may not be the very best book that will ever be written on image processing in Java, but it is the FIRST book."Don't look to this as a how-to book. It is more of an academic treatise on image processing fundementals. As such, it is a valuable reference manual.


    5. Any professional would agree that this book was poorlywritten. Furthermore, the source code (which is what I bought the bookfor) is poorly written and poorly commented. I would recommend "Digital Image Processing Using Java" by Nick Efford. I haven't read it yet, but it's new and can't be any worse than Douglas Lyon's book.


    6. I was so excited to see this title as I am struggling with some interesting image processing problems in Java but I'm afraid it will be the first book I return. It says "Java 2.0 compatible" in red on the cover, and stricly speaking it is (as is all Java 1 code), but it doesn't use any of Swing or Graphics2d. Code developed with this as a base will have to be ported (as the book itself admits around page 377).The OO design is also poor - most everything extends Frames (the final class devel [...]


    7. This book must have taken a lot of work. The algorithms described have all be implemented by the author. Unlike classic image processing textbooks that I have seen, every algorithm actually works. This is NOT a theory book, yet it contains the foundations needed for graduate level work.


    8. The work on Martelli algorithms was a real discovery. Gosh, that is old stuff, but a fresh treatment. I also enjoyed the color morphological image processing. This is really new stuff. All in all, a unique presentation, never before seen algorithms, and all in Java. Well done.
